Default OT: Online Demos - 03-29-2006 , 12:52 PM

This is seriously off topic, but I'm sure lots of people have advice for me.

I want to set up a PC which will have our application installed and want to
allow full control over the internet for the purpose of prospects using to
"test-drive" our application....

I need something that has the following features:

- Easily accessible using a web broswer only.
- Secure - the machine will either sit on our network or on the internet
somewhere - I want the user to be presented with a single icon that they can
click to run the application but allow nothing more..
- Log of who is using the demo site.
- Only allowing one person in at a time (the test-drives will be scheduled).
-
I don't know if I can achieve all of the above..

Any suggestions / recommendations? The application is a windows client
application that runs against a jBASE database (to keep it relevant to this
group!!).

Thanks in advance

Simon

Hi Simon, I have used a company called placewhere for online demos and
presentation, normally this is with me speaking at one end and others
watching remotely, however you can share a single application and allow
the other members to have control + you can schedule meetings, tho you
may still have to manually set them up each time. They are now called
microsoft office live meeting

It is ofcourse chargeable...

I'm familiar with gotomeeting.. but I'm under pressure to provide
"unassisted" demo's. I can't distribute a demo CD like some of my
competitors (which supply fully running versions on CD), so want to provide
a fully running online demo version... I'm not sure that gotomeeting can
provide this "unassisted" functionality.

I thought about using www.logmein.com - setting up a demo account that only
has access to the demo system... but it doesn't give me the ability to
track who is running the demo ... Ideally I'd like to provide time-limited
login/passwords though I could probably do this at an application level.

I'll rereview gotomeeting, but my gut feeling is that it doesn't get me out
of this particular hole...

Regards
Simon

Citrix online also has gotoassist and gotomypc, but the meeting is better
for test drives and conferencing.

Simon,

Why not use Remote Connections? This comes on all w2k and XP installs
and can be downloaded for any other OS. You will have to have TS
installed and licenses for it but it works very well. You can limit
the users to connect directly to a application upon login and then when
they close the app they get logged off. I use this for a few customer
and I have full access to the application.

Interesting idea... Could this be run from within a web browser (or at
least fired off by a url?)

I believe the client trying to connect would need the Windows Terminal
Services Client (MSTSC.exe), found on WinXP machines only. Win2000 and
older machines do not have this program by default.

Also, Windows Terminal Server comes with one free connection, so you
wouldn't have to license the product since you never plan to have more
than one person connected at a time.

Regardless of the above, I'm not sure this solution will meet all of
your requirements.

Some other products, similar to the ones mentioned by others are:

WebEx.com
LogMeIn.com
CoPilot.com

I don't think so, but you could send them a shortcut and have them
place that on their desktop. Kevin is correct (my mistake) you need to
install the file (about 1meg) for w2k boxes. If you are installing the
client then you could wrap the shortcut in a install so that it
automattically adds the shortcut.

Some of the other products that Kevin mentions can get expensive and I
know at least WebEx is not an unattended demo.

True.

He might also look at VNC or Ultra VNC (Both Free). They have browser
based connectivity, but I would want the box clients are connecting to,
not to be attached to my local network.
