Simon,

We use Remote Desktop - you will have to buy a few cals (user based,
NOT device based!!) on 2003 server, but you can then host everything
you need locally

Like Citrix you can then "tandem" to the machine (terminal services
manager) to walk people through the process.

You CAN fire off via a URL (provided people are using IE - an ActiveX
--> you can see the code if you load up sharepoint)

This is the way we have provided Visage test drives for many years -->
user profile under windows can fire of a specific program --> when they
exit this, they are logged off.

HOWEVER, for a non-trivial system like your, thre ARE risks associated
with un-aided walk throughs --> I'd push to run "remote" walk throughs.
I've actually done presentations to board of directors from 1/2 way
around the world (more convenient that 2 days of flights for 2-4 hour
presentation - great way to demonstrate "technology" to)

You can install firewalls & only allow port 3389 (@ router/DMZ and also
windows firewall)

Please contact me direct if you want more details

I want to set up a PC which will have our application installed and want to
allow full control over the internet for the purpose of prospects using to
"test-drive" our application....

I need something that has the following features:

- Easily accessible using a web broswer only.
- Secure - the machine will either sit on our network or on the internet
somewhere - I want the user to be presented with a single icon that they can
click to run the application but allow nothing more..
- Log of who is using the demo site.
- Only allowing one person in at a time (the test-drives will be scheduled).
This might be far from what you want and I have no idea if this will
work (they say that women add more disclaimers to their writing, but I
don't know if that is true), but I have thought about trying
gotomypc.com. cheers! --dawn

It works well. I use vnc for all my demos because I can type or the user
can type and I can watch. And, free is a good price.

True.

He might also look at VNC or Ultra VNC (Both Free). They have browser
based connectivity, but I would want the box clients are connecting to,
not to be attached to my local network.

Greetings,

I wonder that no one suggested going to EASYCO and renting
time on one of their server boxes?

Or do they not support jBase ??

Any suggestions / recommendations? The application is a windows client
application that runs against a jBASE database (to keep it relevant to
this group!!).

Thanks in advance

Thanks for all the thoughts...

Remote desktop sounds like the way forward, though I think i need to wrap it
up in a web page with my own login/password concept.

I don't have a problem with hosting - I already have a jBASE box "hosted" on
the net with my software pre-installed - it's just "controlled" access to
the box that is the problem....

I'll have a play with some of the ideas..

Thanks again..

Regards
Simon

Larry

I don't know whether EasyCo support jBase though I suspect they do.

The problem I have isn't the hosting of the database (I have a dedicated
hosted server running jBASE that is available for the task).

It's more providing controlled and secure access to the client application
over the web. I could for example just give out the client application on
a CD and configure to access the server over the web but that may provide
"installation" related support issues - I'm still considering this as an
option but I'm not entirely happy with it.

I like the terminal services concept and will be looking more into this.
Products like gotomypc, logmein etc are also an option... I may just put a
second PC on the net with just the client application installed
pre-configured to run against the server....

Regards
Simon
