The terrible scourge of corporate sponsorship has struck at the very soul of
Australia and the greatest race in the sport of kings, even I can get
excited and I know absolutely everything that one needs to know about
horses - they kick at one end, they bite at the other, and bookies drive
mercedes whilst punters drive trabants :-)
But the nation does come to a halt for those few minutes and I believe that
that does not happen anywhere else in the Universe.
As for that weird event that you mention, my wife and I were very elated and
late for work that day in 1983, then we discovered that Alan Bond was a
major white collar criminal and lost all interest.
Personally I consider anything less than 20,000 tons is probably unsafe and
even that is dodgy. If you wonder why consider my experience includes a
force 9 gale through the Bay of Biscay that reduced the Southern Cross to 4
knots. At sea in April 1968 off the coast of the New Zealand on the Maori
in a monster storm knowing that it's sister ship the Wahine was sinking in
Wellington harbour. On Lake Whakatipu, 1500 feet deep and glacial, in a
runabout when a sudden wind blew up waves that were higher than the boat. I
may be a slow learner but I have realised that the best thing to do with
water is purify it and wash the bottles to store the whisky :-)
