Default [OT] Government Information Security - 07-31-2005 , 07:35 PM

[This is sort of relevant in that the servers are AIX/UniVerse servers]

From slashdot.org:

http://www.geoffreyhuntley.com/news/data-security-101/

Geoff writes with a story from Australia: "Eighteen AIX servers purchased
from government via auction -- none of them had data removed from them.
Ticket Vending and Validation source code, Payroll, Finance, Emails and
Customer complaints. All there on every server; they were even nice enough
to include some old backup tapes. At ~$14USD per server, it's amazing how
cheap personal information has become."

Hi
You will be happy to know that it was not the fault of the RTA !!!!
According to them the 3rd party disposal firm loaded a program that can
reset all unix passwords and did not bother to finish the job by erasing the
disks. They also claim that there was no private information on the disks
despite the clear pictures on Huntley's site.
I always new Unix was sloppy and very unsafe! But a program to reset all
passwords without access to any accounts, wow it shows how much better
Windows is.
Peter McMurray
Of course anything a government agency says must be true!
