Default [OT] Does CDP display a certain snobbishness when relying to newbies? - 04-19-2006 , 09:43 AM

Fellow CDPers,

I read this article today regarding linux and found there _could_ be certain
similarities between what the article describes and some of us in this group
as we respond to MV newbies. As a preemptive strike no, I don't think we all
are like the article and no, _not_everything_applies_. I am just offering
the link for those of us who might wish to try a session of introspection to
see where we and the article might intersect.<g>

This is not an attempt at starting a flame war or a finger-pointing contest.
I actually am not expecting replies to this post, only introspection. If it
helps us get along better and helps us help one another better, then it
served its purpose.

Change "relying" to "replying" in the subject line.

Agreed. As I mentioned, I only want to generate some introspection. Past
posts follow your general statement, but there are a few...

Bruce -- I suspect the snobbishness in the case you allude to was more
related to the fact that there was some good reason to believe that
Jason, aka Paul, was trolling. If I am wrong about that, please
correct me. Cheers! --dawn

I'm not talking about or alluding to any post in particular, recent or
ancient. I was just making an observation in general since I have seen
instances where help could have been offered in a better and friendlier
fashion than what was done. Of course, that is my own opinion, to which I am
entitled. Yours counts too.

My post was just my effort to help us be better than the rest, not just in
this group but in USENET in general. I figure if we err and actually help a
"troll" by mistake, so what? I'd rather be known for being helpful rather
than a hindrance...even at the risk of giving away something for free (for
those of you who are self employed - and I've been just that for over half
my career). Goodwill can more than offset that loss, in my experience and
opinion.

If you scan this group and look at messages over the course of years, you'll
see that once in a while we make the mistake of offending a true newbie or
even a seasoned professional who just hasn't had experience in a certain
area (and usually just "lurks" in CDP) just because the post appears to be
that of a "troll". Our numbers are thinning and I feel that to keep MV going
we need new blood. We can ill afford to drive off the newbies or offend our
veterans.

<sarcasm>
Unless, of course, we are just biding our time until we can get out and to
hell with the rest and who cares about new blood in MV anyway!
</>

So, when I read the article I mentioned in my OP, I thought I'd share and
provoke some thought. That's all. No allusion to any post in particular.
Don't read more into my post than what's there! <g>

"Can't we all just get along?"

I'm thinking of the gentleman that wanted us to get his data off Pick
in one simple command. He deserved what he got.

But, anyone that asks a legitimate question is usually given good,
detailed information in a friendly manner.

So, the answer is ....No. We are a great bunch of guys and gals.

Again, I was not alluding to one particular post nor poster. (I guess I can
keep typing this response for every time my purpose gets misconstrued!)

Key word: _usually_. My point e-x-a-c-t-l-y!

I already knew that!

You have not seen snobbishness until you lurk in comp.databases.theory,
my friend.

I have begun to wonder if we need a new USENET group, called
"comp.databases.nit-pick"

*big grin*
