Bruce, I think you yourself have missed a key point: Just because we
use the word "I" or refer back to some other postings doesn't mean we
think we've been targeted or that you're talking about some specific
thread.
Actually, I had offline emails to the contrary. Things were discussed with
several individuals and all matters thought personal were cleared up
satisfactorily.

It's difficult to comment on these things without reference
to our own experience - that's the way people try to confirm their
understanding, but I think you're misinterpreting that as us thinking
that there was some trigger to all of this.

In the article to which you referred in your OP, the word 'Linux'
could easily have been replaced with 'Pick'. My understanding is that
you believe we should remember our own newbie roots and be civil with
newcomers.

Bingo!!!

Chill bud. Some or most of us do get it. Your effort has not been in

Fellow CDPers,

I read this article today regarding linux and found there _could_ be certain
similarities between what the article describes and some of us in this group
as we respond to MV newbies. As a preemptive strike no, I don't think we all
are like the article and no, _not_everything_applies_. I am just offering
the link for those of us who might wish to try a session of introspection to
see where we and the article might intersect.<g

This is not an attempt at starting a flame war or a finger-pointing contest.
I actually am not expecting replies to this post, only introspection. If it
helps us get along better and helps us help one another better, then it
served its purpose.

I read that same article.
When reading various linux newsgroups, I am struck by how "ready to
attack" many of the regulars of those groups are.

I've seen what I consider legitimate newbie questions posed, and because
the question wasn't worded quite in a way to satisfy somebody's tastes,
they jump down the throat of the O.P. Other times the poster will just
receive a long, drawn out public stoning on the social mistake he has
just made even *asking* such a question. Very childish and unnecessary
when often the O.P.'s question can be answered with just a sentence or
two. I think - "Geez! Why didn't you just answer the guy's question?"

While the members here do have differences of opinion from time to time,
we generally tend not to resort to the tactics I've witnessed on other
NGs. and *that's* the difference.

....

Oh crap. Was I supposd to top-post here or... bottom post... or something?

part is the *truly* bright ones *are* the
nicest. <spell check please>

In fact, when I need some relief and civility or to feel that I'm
welcome in NGs in general, I come here so that I can occasionally get
the feeling that I'm NOT a bloomin' idiot (if you think it, you
typically keep it to yourself and I thank you for that).

That said, I would, of course, favor any improvements we can make.
