Default OS ref to Lat/Longtitude - 10-02-2005 , 03:55 AM

I am looking for a pick databasic to accurately convert Ordnance Survey
references to Latitude/Longditude. Does anyone now of anything around in
the UK - naturally as cheap as possible

Looks as if your Government is giving away the tools albeit in a
proprietary format (perhaps you should press them to follow
Massachusetts' lead?):

If DIY is too expensive, e-mail me to discuss contracting it.

Looking at the pdf that gives worked examples of the calculations, one
of the problems that may be faced is the floating point precision.

I've had this problem for many years,as I maintain the Global Gazetteer on
a series of Pick databases. R83 -> AP/PRO -> d3.

My solution has been to use a privately-written spreadsheet (which also
covers the Irish grid) that cost around £10.

I export the dat from the database, feed it into the spreadsheet, export
the results and merge fields back into the database. Export/import via
wIntegrate.

Best wishes

Good solutions on the table already.

For DIY
- The calcs are available in spreadsheets.
- The more geeky among us might consider an HTTP interface to the OS
coordinate converter service and do conversions over the web as
required.
- There are also Web Services freely available, and everyone knows now
that Web Services are practical and easy to do with MV.
- There are freeware utilities available which can be called from MV.

Or you can allow someone like Tom to do it.

Terry, I know you were looking for this one to be handed to you but
it's easy enough where people are more likely to give you a fishing
pole than a fish, and it's potentially complex enough where you
probably won't see a solution posted here for free.

Tony

To get the best results for the lowest cost, just do the maths.

I was going to suggest working out the formula, but this document seems
to have done the whole thing for you.
