Default OpenQM Tip of the Week: The CUMULATIVE keyword - 09-29-2011 , 05:35 AM

Hi all,

It's Thursday again. This week's Tip of the Week article is about the
query processor CUMULATIVE keyword.

Is there anything QM can't do?

And how important is this, really? Would all copies of QM suddenly
cease to function if Ladybridge went out of business? No. Just like
if any MV vendor went out of business, you would have time (likely
years) to migrate to another system. Just look at how many people are
using copies of "Pick" that are decades old.

I find some hypocrisy in your thinly veiled suggestion that people
should avoid small companies when yours is no more than a one man
operation itself.

Hi Tony/Kevin,

As I have stated on many occasions, Ladybridge Systems may be a small
company but we work closely with "associates", many of whom are also
small companies, to bring together the resources and skills of a
larger company without needing to maintain these in-house at times
when they are not needed. It is a very attractive way to work and
allows us to be very attentive to our users.

My role as product architect does not mean that I am the only person
working on the product even if it is usually me that posts on the news
groups. If Tony had gone to the Spectrum Conference last year he would
have found three people from Ladybridge Systems there.

Although I have no plans to terminate my involvement with QM, I can
confirm that we have business continuance plans in place should the
unforeseen occur.

And, to answer Jeff's point, yes there still are a few things that QM
cannot do. We have an enormous wish list that we are steadily working
our way down. Watch out for some major stuff in the not too distant
future.

The topics for Tip of the Week articles have largely been driven by
specific user requests or in response to questions posted here and on
other multivalue groups. Our intention is that these should be short
articles addressing topics that users seem to miss. Many of these are
unique to QM; some are not. Last week's article on UPDATE.RECORD for
example is largely applicable to UniVerse's implementation of the same
tool. "What?" I hear you cry? Yes, UV does have UPDATE.RECORD but for
some reason (certainly last time I looked) it isn't documented and
isn't in the VOC for all flavours.

Suggestions for new topics are always welcome.

Martin, I'm sure you know I meant it as a major compliment. Compared to any
DBMS market, you are a class act.
