Default Okidata B6250 Laser Printer PCL Question - 05-12-2010 , 06:58 PM

Group,

In the past, we have used Kyocera and HP printers. Recently I purchased an
Okidata B6250 laser printer, and even though it claims to be PCL 5e and PCL
6 compliant, it seems to work differently.
Specifically, it doesn't seem to recognize some common PCL escape codes that
my other printers used such as bold on and bold off. Also, it defaults to
an unknown font (not courier), with horizontal spacing compression.
Is anyone aware of programming issues with new Oki printers? If so, I'd
appreciate a response.
By the way, our computer system is AIX/d3, version 7 something.

Rob

Seems to me this is a question for Okidata product support. You might
have old or defective firmware or drivers.

The current 'font' can be pretty persistent on laser printers, even across
power off/ power on, and sounds like he's got a proportional font selected.
Even so, I'd expect it to respond to boldface on/off commands... Odd.

We got one of the HP printers in the Laserjet Pro series and were surprised to
find they didn't offer the usual and customary 'soft font' feature -- even
though 3rd party vendors will happily supply you with micr toner that will fit
that model printer just fine. We're very much more diligent now at testing
for required features in just-received printers, since our handy dandy d3
check priinting programs were 'all dressed up with no place to go' for a few
days over this issue! {We ended up buying a more expensive HP printer.)

If the printers are parallel they will not work correctly with some USB to
parallel cables. There is a standard published for USB to parallel and not
all cables on the market meet it. The usual symptom is the printer does not
see the escape sequences.

We're coming across a few printers (including some from HP!) that are
advertised as PCL but when you dig into it are actually PCL
"compatible". They seem to ignore PCL codes sent directly to them and
I suspect that they are relying on windows to interpret PCL. We've
never spent significant time trying to get them to work because either
the printers that fall into this category are pretty cheap and it's
not worth the time or we install Print Wizard to get around the
problem.
