Default NT environment (UniVerse) copy files from windows into new account folder? - 09-18-2005 , 08:39 AM

I am working in an NT (2000) windows environment.

Should I be able to just copy files and folders from another account on
the main machine into the account I am working with and then "tell" my
test account about the files so I can work with "copies" of the data
rather than the data itself?

This seems very possible but I wanted to check with the experts!

Basically, yes...... but as others have warned, are you up to the
level of skill that this might involve????

Once copied/pasted/whatever, to make the "new" data available under
UV, you'll have to either edit the UV.ACCOUNT file in UV with the
relevent new account details, or, better still, you can achieve the
same task using UniAdmin. Given your apparent current skill levels
I'd strongly advocate the latter, and even better than that, read
widely before you attempt the task, and work in concert with somebody
who knows, learning as you go..... I think it's called "learning to
crawl before you walk" ......

I think others before me have advocated you should join the U2 list.
That *really* is *the* place for UV queries.....

Well, to be honest I did one UniVerse project in 1997 for 1 week in
college, and then after that SQL. We also worked with pointer based
database and other types. I have never really wanted to deviate from
SQL and to tell you the truth, this is a *migration* project from
UniVerse to SQL. I know, get an expert. I am running 2 systems. One
live and the other one on another machine. All I really want to do is
be able to get the data out and in a nice format (the download
program). The funny thing is I am becoming somewhat interested in the
gestalt of PICK as it is so 1964. I feel like I am programming in some
bunker in "Dr. Stangelove."

It seems the major stumbling block to this approach is UniVerse
indexes. The path is embedded and will cause you problems when
you move the file to another account. Ideally you would need to
delete the index before the move and recreate it once in the new
location. If this is not an option you can sometimes fix the problem
by rebuilding the index in the new account before you attempt to
access the file(s). If this does not work you might try joining
the U2 mailing list at www.u2ug.org. There was a discussion on
this topic recently. The archive of the U2 list is at www.indexinfocus.com.

In years past I have done what you describe, and it worked fine. But my
recollection is that you need to be careful if you have any files containing
indexes, as the index path contained in the data file is an absolute path
instead of a relative one (meaning that both the production and copied test
files will both then attempt to update the production index). There is a way
to reset the index, but I don't recall offhand how to do it.

(Note: this was with an older UV system, perhaps the index method has
changed in later releases).
