Default NNTP server with CDP feed - 10-13-2005 , 03:15 PM

I'm looking for a decent Usenet server, free, posting allowed, and of
course with a consistent feed of CDP. No more than a week of
historical archive required. I don't want to use Google Groups and a
browser for Usenet - such sacrilege... So far, free servers are
read-only or no CDP. Any ideas?

Glen, does PickSource have NNTP? Even if it does I wouldn't want to
abuse it.

Thanks!
T

pop! goes the cork -- Tony has managed to post in less then 30 lines of
text; hell, I actually might read this one and respond for real.

Not free, but free for the taking; ask your friends if they have dsl
but don't use the newsgroup access that comes with their account,
and mooch off their subscription.

There was a german university that was giving free accounts away,
dunno if they're still around...

I believe it was news.cis.dfn.de (news.individual.net), and they
started charging for access as of 4/1/05.

Tony, doesn't your ISP offer USENET as part of the package? If so and
they don't carry cdp, you might contact them and ask for them to carry
it.

Joe

I was hesitant, but have no reason to go back.

What happened to your usual pragmatism? Buck up, buddy - google groups
is just fine. It also gives a glimpse into BUI software (your term
IIRC? for WebDev or Rich User Interfaces, etc).

Google Groups doesn't provide anywhere near the features of real
NNTP/Usenet clients. You get what you get and you're stuck with it -
they're a "one size is supposed to fit all" provider. If they allowed
a customizable BUI then I might build my own little interface - I'm
not a purist about delivery mechanisms but I don't like the idea of a
non-standard delivery mechanism that removes features available with
the real thing. I wrote an NTTP client in D3 years ago that had more
features than Google Groups provides. I don't read e-mail with a BUI
either unless my hard drive takes a dive and I don't have access to
Outlook for a few days. If GG delivers NNTP via e-mail it becomes too
easy to publish e-mail addresses, accidentally respond
inappropriately, etc (as we've seen with some humorous results here).

I do subscribe to Google Groups for jBASE and DesignBais forums which
publish via e-mail, but those are GG-only forums, not NNTP to start.
I use what's available.

Sometimes I'm bleeding edge, sometimes I'm an old fuddy-duddy. Go
figure.

For home and business I use Cox cable which does have a stable CDP
feed and lots of history. Verizon Wireless, which I've raved about in
another thread, does not have NNTP servers (it's not a fault, that's
just not their business). That leaves me to find my own server when
I'm unwired.

I've tried all the servers provided here and via e-mail - thank you
all for your suggestions. Unfortunately I still haven't found a free
NNTP server with a complete CDP feed and with Post access to guests.
It may not take much to write a proxy so that I can access my Cox feed
even when I'm roaming. If I do that I may publish the solution
somewhere. It might be as simple as port forwarding. We'll see.

Thanks.
T

Because Cox carries cdp and Verizon doesn't, your last comments may
touch upon the solution. I know that BellSouth (my ISP) does not
permit USENET access from a "foreign" IP, so I can't access newsgroups
directly unless I'm home on my local DSL.

Joe

Tony and the group,

Some ISPs don't care WHERE the NNTP requests come from, as long as
they are authorized. Have you tried configuring your newsreader to use
your Cox Cable login on the Cox Cable NNTP server when you are
connected through Verizon?

I've done it successfully for my pacbell.net login (or whatever name
they are currently using!)

Cox requires no login because they only allow access from their IP
blocks. I've tried. They certainly don't want their servers opened
up to anyone who happened to have a user/psw, that would be chaos.
I'll work out the IP forwarding or proxy thing through my router, it
shouldn't be a big deal.

To clarify a misconception: it's not that Verizon servers don't
support NNTP, it's that Verizon doesn't have NNTP servers (yet).
