Default New UI for Google Groups question - 01-23-2007 , 05:40 PM

I'm being a dumb user. Earlier today google switched their user
interface to network news and such (google groups) and now when I go
into a topic/thread and read it, I can't figure out how to get back to
the Topic List (which appears to be what they call it) other than using
the back button. Because I think the answer is in front of me and I'm
just missing it, I'm not posting the question to a group on google
groups, but to this one, figuring this list already knows I'm too lazy
to figure this out myself if someone else knows the answer. So, clue
me in if you have figured it out. Thanks. --dawn

Hi

Just click on comp.databases.pick at the top of the screen. Just
under Google groups.
Or press BackSpace button.

Regards

Ah ha! Without mousing over that, there was no way to see that it was
a link (their other links are underlined, as best I can tell). But one
would think this must be state of the art UI, so now that perhaps I can
use it, I'll have to study it, eh?

thanks. --dawn

.... or at top right there is the word 'Discussions' (also not
underlined)

Not used it myself yet, but looks pretty confusing! If us IT professionals
can't get to grips with it then god help the "ordinary" user.

I sometimes think that Google are so much into technology - particularly
AJAX - that they forget basic stuff about designing a user interface. Stuff
like making a button look like a button and a link look like a link.

Sure enough. Is this a new "best practice" for users to have to point
at every word without a consistent approach to indicating that a word
is a link?

It looks like the things to click are either small font, blue (before
clicked) and underlined or slightly larger font, dark gray (or is that
black?) and underlined or white on gray and underlined or a button or
some (but not all) of the bold font (different sizes) that are NOT
underlined until you mouse over them.

Vewy intewesting and unexpected. --dawn

Simon .. no offense meant but

Not sure that 'ordinary' user would be confused. Most 'users' get it
much easier than 'techies'. We have expectations. We *know* how it
should look/work

Generally i think the newer look is cleaner.

And don't forget .. it is a very competitive world for Google and the
likes. Continual tweaking is the only way for them to stay ahead.

In my opinion we are all in fact 'ordinary' users on the internet, but
I do agree with Simon. Links should look "linkable" - it's a
fundamental of web design. That said, I do like a clean-looking page
with minimal graphics.

Hi Dawn
I am delighted to hear that I am not the only one not delighted with the
interface. There again I have only used the Internet for 10 years and
designed user interfaces for 33 years. What would I know?
