Hi
What is the dual processor problem? Thanks for the warning.

Tony,

I can't speak about other MV vendors, but I think that you are asking a
lot out of Raining Data. I'd be happy if they would fix the dual
processor problem.

It's a shame that they seemed to have abandoned the D3 product. They
seem more concerned with making sure that people don't steal their
product than they are fixing problems or making improvements.

But I digress.

Here is a quote from the Raining Data support forums, in the D3 Linux
section.

"Certain problems have been reported when running D3/Linux 7.4.2 on
machines running hyperthreading. These problems usually occur during
the boot up of D3 and result in the spooler not starting. D3 must be
configured with absprotect off when running on these types of machines.
This can be done by shutting D3 down and then modifying the
/usr/lib/pick/pick0 (or other configuration file) with the vi editor.
Add the line absprotect off. Absprotect is on by default."

Even though it doesn't specifically mention dual processors, it really
does apply.

I also suspect that it goes further back then 7.4.2 and has more
effects than just the spooler. We are currently running 7.3.0 on
Redhat 7. something on a dual processor machine. Sometimes when we
reboot, the spooler doesn't start, and the tandem function is hit or
miss. Sometimes when I tandem a port, I get a bunch of garbage come
across the screen and if that happens, then my port gets completely
locked.

Thanks Tracey
I had not spotted this report. I only have single processors at sites at
the moment but with my luck someone will upgrade next week. Do you know if
this also applies to Windows sites.

Peter,

I don't know if it affects the NT version or not. I wish that I could
be more help.

As for the absprotect off fix, I am a bit leary of that. I am in the
process of setting up a new server with dual processors (our VAR
recommeneded this to us) and tried putting that in the pick0 file. I
was having some weird things going on, so I took it out and boot linux
with a single processor kernal instead.

Ver 7.5 is supposed to fix this, but if you look on the RD forum, then
accouncement was from last June, so I am not holding my breath on it
coming out any time soon.

Tracey,

I believe that most of the dual-processor issues are resolved with the
current 7.4.2 - the 7.5 install fixes some of the startup issues, and I
saw a note a few releases ago that the "tandem" issue had been
addressed.

The Tandem issue was when you tandemed to a process that was running on
a different procesor to the one you were running on, as there was no
relaible way to pass messages - I believe that both processors now have
an "affinity" for the same CPU, which "solves" the roblem (though I
could be wrong)
