If you have projects on MVDC, please download your files before this weekend. Due to severe technical problems this week, a lack of funding, and a general lack of community interest I'm taking it down for good. I just don't have the time or money to devote to such a demanding service if there's only 1 or 2 projects with any kind of regular activity. FTP to the site and look in the mvdevcentral directory. You can download your cvsroot, web pages, and downloads. I will be wiping the FTP directory on Saturday. Glen |

I've been working with Glen superficially to co-administer the MVDC site and I'm quite disturbed by these events. Glen has put in a lot of time and expense and it gets him nothing when all he wants is to spawn some community interest and help keep the community vibrant. The community shows virtually no interest in PickSource or MVDC. I'm not saying anyone should feel compelled to visit some website or use software that doesn't interest them, but I wish we knew what it was that would motivate this group of user/developers to function as an active and sharing community - a Usenet forum doesn't quite cut it. If a ton of free software and information doesn't do it then what will? As Glen said, the raw backup of projects and web pages, etc will be taken down this weekend. I've downloaded the entire repository and will make it available on e-mail request only from the Nebula R&D website. This is a historical reference, will not be updated, will not be turned into a community site (by me), and will be taken down after some number of months. It's really a shame to see these great open source projects go to waste. The Open Source thing may get a revival in this market but someone else needs to step up to bat. I don't think it's fair to put this on Glen anymore. TG@ removethisNebula-RnD .com Glen wrote: If you have projects on MVDC, please download your files before this weekend. I also feel it is a shame to let it go. I have downloaded a program or two from PickSouce, including a nice XML parser that Patrick wrote. I submitted a program before the big crash a couple of years ago, but admit I have done little since. What can we as a group do to save the site? Send encouragement? Send money? Volunteer time? If it were just a case of parking the site somewhere, and having a pipe out to the net, we could certainly host it and have othr people administer .... but I have a feeling that it is more than that Jeffrey Kaufman wrote: I also feel it is a shame to let it go. Would the task be any easier ieas simply moved to Sourceforge? I know it would run the risk of getting "lost", but ... |
