Default mvBase shared printer problem - 07-20-2005 , 03:32 PM

I am running mvBase on MS Server 2000. I have a shared printer that I
can print a MS test print page. Whenever I try to use the workstation
service configurator to create this as an mvBase printer, it
immediately sets the printer to disabled mode. I have checked and
double checked the printer name and mvbase server name.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hi There,

I seem to remember having a problem in the past and I think it was to do
with the account mvBASE was starting with having permissions to start the
printers or something like that.

Just check that the account that is starting the mvworkstation service has
adequate permissions

What version of mvBASE are you running? I read on the RainingDATA
compatibility site that mvBASE 1.3 only works as a service on NT4 and that
you need mvBASE 2.0 to work as a service on anything higher

There are a couple of possibilities. One is that the line that you
assigned to the printer when you configured Workstation is already in
use by another process.

The other has to do with the user under which the printer was
installed on the server. If this is the problem, follow these steps in
order:

1. At TCL, do an SP-KILL Dn to delete the printer.
2. In mv.ADMIN, delete the printer from Workstation.
3. In Windows, on the mv.BASE server, delete the printer.
4. In Windows, on the network server (if extant) delete the printer.
5. If the printer is attached to a PC (vice a printer switch), delete
it.
Now we do all that backwards:
6. Install the printer on the PC (or printer switch) and share it.
7. In Windows, on the mv.BASE server, install the printer *under the
same user under which mv.BASE was installed* (this may be mvbadmin)
and print a test page. Ensure sharitude.
8. In WIndows, on the network server if it's separate, install the
printer and print a test page.
9. Configure the printer in mv.ADMIN.
10. Do a STARTPTR and print something.
