Default mv "Visual" Databasic editor - 01-09-2006 , 03:00 AM

Before I start reinventing the wheel (wink to Tony G!)...

Anybody know of a windows editor that will automatically format databasic
code for editting - it doesn;t have to have any MV connectivity - I'm quite
happy to copy the code up to a windows file, edit and and send it back.

I'm after an editor that gives features such as the .net editors - color
coding of reserved words and auto indenting. I guess it would be too
much to ask for syntax checking!

I seem to recall an editor that did the color coding trick (I'll google back
through the group for it) but wondered if there were any others.

I'm not looking to spend a fortune - and want a standalone editor that I can
integrate into my source control software.

Regards
Simon

Google for UniEditor and/or Crimson.

UniEditor has support for Universe, UniData & D3 and comes with VB6
source code. I haven't used it with any of these MV flavours - I'm
simply in the process of adding OpenQM support.

Crimson was, I think, been mentioned on this list a few weeks back; I
know nothing more about it.

Crimson is the product I intimated in my email, I've used it before and it's
reasonable..

I'll check out UniEditor - as I said, I'm not worried about accessing data
directly at all. If it comes with source code it should be easier to add
into my existing source control system.

Hi
I can write any editor like PE in BRIZ
see screenshots and example:
www.infotools.ru/freeware/briz/PE/index.htm

You need COM or DLL? I use C++.

Grigory

Simon:

You may want to check out either "WED" from AccuTerm or the editor with
wIntegrate. I use both on occasion. There's also UniDebugger.

Simon,

I'd HIGHLY Recommend AccuTerm's WED editor from AccuSoft (www.asent.com).

I appreciate the nod, but I'm hesitent to wink back at ya if ya know
what I mean... :0

Nope, I never did this one - formatting, syntax highlighting, etc.
outside of MV. I know both mv.NET and OSMOSiS have it though. OK
enough on them.

For text editing I highly recommend ConTEXT. It is free but it's not
open source:
http://www.context.cx/
There are code templates available which provide highlighting features
for some ungodly number of languages and configuration formats, many
created by the user market. You might want to do one for MV BASIC.
Surprisingly it has no formatting features.

You might consider a single-user copy of AccuTerm. It's not free but
it does include wED which does everything you need. You may want to
ask Pete Schellenbach if he'll work out something with you for a
standalone version of wED or its code set - he might at least tell you
the engine he's using underneath if there is one.

None of this leads to seamless flow with your source control, sorry.

Semi-related, for a long time I've been looking for a utility to
format VB6 code. For various reasons I don't trust anything I've seen
out there, and those that seem reasonable seem to cost too much for my
taste. Surprisingly there aren't many available. So I wrote my own
VB6 formatting code in VB6 and it works well. If anyone is
interested, please e-mail me and I'll send you a copy after I've made
a couple more tweaks.

Good luck.
Tony

Simon,

I love a freeware editor called Crimson
(http://www.crimsoneditor.com/). When I first started using it a few
years ago, I created a jBASE format so that it would color code the
syntax. I then submitted it to Crimson and they added the jBASE format
to their distrib. Its very easy to use as long as you can get at your
files in either a directory structure or via ftp.

If you are using jBASE a put some directions on the jBASE Shared
Software Library that shows you how to compile and catalog directly
from Crimson.

Let me know what you think,

Rick

Wintegrate editor works well, connects to the host, and is free on a 60
day trial.
