Default MV (specifically D3) as LDAP server? - 07-21-2005 , 09:48 AM

Greetings,

We're a small company with a large reliance on technology. We
currently have our contacts database spread over WAY too many
machines. (Mail server is also ldap server, phone systems in 2 offices
also are ldap servers, MANY individual MS Outlook contact files, and,
of course, our customer/vendor/employee files on our D3 RH Linux ES
3.0 main application server). We'd like to consolidate. So what we're
wondering is:

Has anyone done an LDAP SERVER for D3? Given our choice of where to
consolidate our data, our D3 server is the best protected (UPS, RAID,
regular automatic offsite backup), so that's where we'd LIKE to put
our consolidated contacts server.

Thanks in advance!

Good idea, but not an easy to implement application. I have some

project for MV, let me know and I'll get it started @ MVDC. I think
it's a good use of MV power, but meeting the RFC is going to require a
_lot_ of learning. I think it may be worthwhile to look @ openldap and
see if a back-end MV based interface can be designed for it. This
would be a good project for OpenQM integration since the data
management apps can be open sourced along with the DB.

As usual I'll echo Glen's notes. I confess I know little about LDAP
but it's a protocol that seems to keep coming up in discussions. More
and more companies are trying to consolidate their contacts and
passwords into a one-source one-change-fits-all datastore, and Pick is
a perfect platform for that. I agree that this would be a good
project to OpenSource (for D3 and other MV platforms) but I'm not in a
position to make that happen - too much work for that effort, no time
for freebie projects. I've used D3 to write a number of RFC-compliant
clients for protocols including POP3, HTTP, SMTP, and NNTP, and used
D3 as a B2B client/server with many communications pipes and transport
protocols, so I know D3 is a competent platform for this. I also have
a lot of experience working with the internals of MS Outlook,
importing, exporting Contacts, etc. LDAP is just another spec and
there's lots of info available on it. So if you're interested I can
help to pilot this effort on a contracting basis and we can still open
source the code in order to get the benefit of third-party
contributions - if you have any interest in that angle.

(BTW, Steve, explaining how to build an unmunged e-mail address is
only helpful if your live e-mail address isn't already published. In
your Forte Agent newsreader you should munge your address against Spam
under Options > General Preferences > Servers and Accounts > User
Identity. HTH)
