Default MS Virtual PC is now free - 07-14-2006 , 08:59 AM

Just passing along what came up in anothe newsgroup I follow.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

Currently, I use VmWare Workstation 4.x and have been very happy with
it. However, I may now check out the MS product.

Does anyone here have any comments on MS VPC?

Very cool.

It will be more viable when they support Linux.

It's hard to find, but if you download the technical doc, you will find
that Virtual PC does support Linux.

Page 7, last paragraph.

.....Users can also install Windows Server operating systems and
numerous third-party operating systems, including Red Hat Linux, Novell
NetWare

The technical doc can be downloaded from this page:

VPC already supports Linux for most purposes though of course
Microsoft doesn't "support" the Linux guests with add-on software.
Only problem is getting a driver for the sound card that's emulated,
and drag/drop/copy/paste between guest and host doesn't work with
Linux. Other than that I've been happily using VPC for a couple
years.

We've had other discussions on this very topic, comparing VPC and
VMware, Google the CDP archive.

FWIW, Virtual Server has some flexibility that VPC does not. I
recommend interested people look into both and decide which one is
best for their needs.
