Default ManFact - data extraction - 12-07-2005 , 04:50 PM

I just inherited a legacy system running ManFact. I need to extract
the data - hopefully get it 'put back together' in SQL Server. Can
anyone guide me as how I can read/extract/convert these data files into
something I can work with?

THANKS in advance!

I don't know ManFact, but I think it runs on UniData. Correct me if
I'm wrong on that.

Here are some possible strategies.
1. You can read my MultiValue Trilogy of online "flash cards" to get
some idea about MultiValue. Until I fix it, you need to go into each
set separately -- Overview, Data, and Commands. The Overview is just
that and I think it would be interesting, but it has no technical info
in it. http://www.tincat-group.com then MultiValue Trilogy from the
MultiValue dropdown menu.

2. Download and use the Cedarville DOWNLOAD program using
ftp://ftp.cedarville.edu

3. If you have a few project dollars, get the entrinsik.com Informer
product pointing at it.

Hi Heather,

Please have a look at PixieEditor, designed for non-Pickies to get at
PICK data. It has a Windows-style explorer interface assist with
navigation around the database. Data can be extract to SQL style
datastores.

Details at: http://www.pixieware.com/PixieEditor/PEdHelp.htm

Thanks.

Please forgive the perhaps erroneous intuitive leap, but it sounds
like you are convinced that the ManFact environment isn't capable of
integration with newer tools, so you feel a need to move/convert data.
That may not be the case. Given the chance, your MV system can be a
quite capable part of your overall IS network.

For example, you could use a product like mv.NET and its ADO Library
to extract data into ADO.NET datasets and/or SQL Server itself, and
then use those as data sources for your SQL queries. This allows you
to use Crystal Reports, MS Reporting Services, and many other products
with your live application data without getting people involved in the
vaguaries of the platform-specific SQL implementation in an MV
environment. You can also expose BASIC business rules as Web Services
and perform other functions with the same tools, rather than
continually having to look for project-specific tools as each new
requirement comes up.

Please feel free to contact me for more info.
