Default Legal Practice/Case Management Application - 08-22-2006 , 11:00 AM

Hello All,

Can anyone point me to a (fairly at least) modern Law Office/Case
Management application designed for offices of six or more attorneys?

This would ideally be an integrated accounting/client and case
management system tailored for US law firms.

Thanks in advance for any leads,
-Tom

Hi Tom,

I can provide information on a Litigation Management system
D3/Briz/FlashGUI
called Manlit. This is for the investigation and running of a major
case in court.
This would be suitable for cases with many thousands of documents and
pages of evidence.

See www.thomsonelite.com

If you're looking for a firm in the size of 6 (or more) attorneys then
start with Prolaw.

For larger firms or more complex requirements look at Elite.

For leading edge, browser based look at Elite 3E.

Colin:

Since it seems difficult from the http://www.thomsonelite.com website
to figure that out, will those run on OpenQM?

Alas, not likely. There is a blurb somewhere about Prolaw will run on
MS SQL or Sybase SQL Anywhere and Elite will run on MS SQL, Informix,
or Oracle. I believe 3E is currently only offered on MS SQL (64 bit no
less).

The company I worked for was purchased by Thomson a couple of years
ago. We have/had a Legal Management application running on D3 and
UniData. We are still supporting it but it is no longer available for
purchase.

Sorry for the confusion.

Tom,

There are many possibilities but all are SQL or soon will be. These are
all worth a look and have kept up, some like Javelin etc are in wind
down:-

PC Law www.pclaw.com
Aderant CMS www.aderant.com
Elite - As before.

I like to hear stories about successes and failures from either/both
end-user and developer perspectives when products are converted from MV
to SQL. Was this is a conversion or did the company with an MV
solution get bought by a company that already had an SQL solution?

Either way, what advantages do users (or developers) find with the SQL
product compared to the MV product? What, if anything, did those who
converted from the MV solution to the SQL solution lose? Thanks.

A company with an MV solution was bought by a company with an existing SQL
solution.
We have successfully converted a number of the MV clients to SQL.

The SQL solution is much larger, more robust, and has more features with a
much larger user base and support infrastructure.
The MV clients haven't lost much (if anything) when converted. They "lost" a
single server with minimal administration; however, they received a more
scaleable and configurable, multi-tier infrastructure.

With more features the SQL solution is a little more complex and in some
areas not as streamlined. I think this is more due to the solution than the
platform.
