kjournald is eating to many cpu cycles -

I'm running D3 on Redhat 9 and recently installed it on a newer faster
system. When I set up the partitions I made them ext3. Now I see that
kjournald is always consuming 35+% of cpu time. I've done some googling
and set the mounted partitions to defaults, noatime in /etc/fstab, but
that hasn't helped. I noticed when I shutdown D3 on Friday, that
kjournald dropped way down. Could it be that its the unmounted D3
partitions that are causing the trouble. I only have one other
application running (Vsifax) and that only uses the disk when its
actually got some faxing to do.
Should I change the partitions to ext2 or try other options in /etc/fstab?
Thanks,
