Default JET for D3/Linux 7.4.2 (RHEL) - 04-08-2006 , 12:37 AM

I need to upgrade a Customer to D3/Linux 7.4.2 (RHEL) who is using the JET
word processor
as a major part of his application software and was wondering is there a
version of JET that will
run on D3/Linux 7.4.2 (RHEL)
I know there is a version 2.0Q that runs on D3/Linux 7.4.0 but I am unsure
if it runs on 7.4.2
I have tried to contact Dan Cheddar but the email was return address unknown
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Alan

You might want to take a look at this :
http://www.nebula-rnd.com/services/connflight.htm

I haven't used it myself, but I know the guy behind Nebula RnD is
sound.

Mike:

It seems unwise at this time to upgrade a customer to a proprietary
format. If the Jet issue cannot resolved, which I doubt that it
cannot, upgrade to an ODF format.

The version of Jet that runs on 7.4.0 works fine on 7.4.2. At one site
running RHEL3 I am using the 'jet.abs' version (i.e. you must exec
jet, jet.abs, before jet works); at another running RHEL4 I have the jet
abs included in dm,abs,. Both work without problems.

Henry, can you propose a product which converts JET to ODF? I know
there are products that convert Word to ODF. For an additional fee
I'll run one of those against the Word docs that we generate, or the
client can convert Word to ODF themselves. ConnectingFlight used to
be called JET2Word. I changed the name when we started generating
RTF, HTML, and PDF in addition to Word. You want ODF, we got ODF.

Scott,

I think Alan is trying to source 'jet.abs'.

As much as I would like to look at not using JET the Customer is very
reluctant to change anything
So your input is very much appreciated.
Many thanks Scott

The word to ODF or JET to ODF is not necessary. Use an ODF compliant
word processor.

Alan-

I had to do a similar transition during a port for an ADDS/mvBase app to D3
about 4-5 years ago. The basic word processing features of JET were used to
enter and edit notes in the application. I wrote a simple word processor in
BASIC that mimicked the functionality, but without the bells and whistles.
I can try to dig it up if you're interested...wasn't exactly feature-rich
but it worked.

Also, I would recommend a shout out to 'frosty' as a subject line in this
group, as I believe he may know a thing or two about JET... ;-)

Thanks for the plug, Bruce, but I'm afraid I can't be of much help.
That's all behind me now. About a decade. I might be able to
spell "JET," *if* you spotted me the "J" and the "E", but I haven't
used it in so long, I've even stopped hitting the "ESC" key when
composing email.
