Default IBM Universe Personal edition - 04-20-2005 , 10:29 AM

Hello,

Has anyone tried the IBM personal edition of Universe ? I've down
loaded it and installed it without any trouble but when I come to
connect to the database as administrator it complains about the
license having expired ? Has anyone got any ideas ?

Many thanks...

Martin

Hi Martin,

IBM withdrew the previous versions of PE saying that when the PE
versions are re-released they would comply with IBM's licencing
policies, and this appears to be the case.

I have only used Universe PE on Windows and found the following changes
from the previous Universe PE version:

All services that are supplied with a full version, such as odbc, gci,
iphantoms etc are disabled by default. You can easily check this by
running the 'CONFIG' command at the ucl prompt. The licence code is
'-1' and no services are listed.

The advertised version of Universe is 10.1.10, however the actual
version is 10.1.8. This can be checked by running the '.L RELLEVEL'
command at the ucl prompt.

The previous PE version had 8 device licencing sessions, I have not
checked this feature by my guess would be the device licencing sessions
are disabled as well.

The previous PE version had a 10000 frame file size limit , this has
been removed.

The previous PE version could not be activated with a valid licence
code, the current PE version can be activated with a valid licence
code.

In short, it appears that the current PE version is a full version of
Universe, but is restricted by disabling all support services and can
only be used as a console application, which I think is fair enough.

The previous PE version was fairly 'loose', and did leave enough
gapping holes that a half savvy programmer / administrator could have
easily exploited and used the PE version for production work.

Maybe this is what happened, it only takes 1 person to stuff things up
for the rest of us.

Anyhow, I congratulate IBM on the updated PE releases, regardless of
the restrictions. At least it make our premier technology available to
the masses.

HTH

Regards Barry

Disappointingly there seems to be no Linux eval copy.
