Good catch, Henry (or is it two r's now-see below). We will have to
ask IBM what their intentions are with U2 in light of this, but I
suspect that the PE editions will be the extent of the free offering.
We shall see. Cheers! --dawn

Hard to compete when others such as MS SQL and Oracle are offering free
versions too.

The only one my primary ISP will provide for me is MySQL. I suspect
that is true of other ISPs as well. I feel the barometer falling in
the database industry. cheers! --dawn

do you think we can at least get some stuff for free like pdp.net? What
is RD going to do to survive? Cant see too many new people wanting to
learn or buy pick.

Try EasyCo, they are willing to work with VARs and Developers. Not an
ISP, but definitely a resource. They are heavily involved in QM. That
said they can do all major MV DB's

P.S. MySQL,if you absolutely have to have it by tomorrow
(or the day after).

Yes, I know they have very good pricing for such. My point was really
that your average web developer is working with a typical ISP who is
likely to provide MySQL, but not likely others. Of course you can get
virtual servers and do it yourself or find someone to host pretty much
anything you want.

We'll see how aggressive IBM is. If DB2 doesn't show up in Debian,
Mandrake or RH as a bundled package in 12 months, then it may not take off

bundled with Linux. If they can jump through the hoops to get on the
Debian maintainer list and also convince RH packagers to bundle DB2, then
they may have a very successful launch. I just wish that Ladybridge
understood the importance of that as well, for OpenQM. Of course, it also
helps to have OSS applications to use with the DB. Otherwise, how can the
industry really review or promote the DB? I know that the MPL-licensed
MvCMS project is underway @ U2UG, but I have a feeling that it is going to
be a while before anything reviewable comes out of it. Besides, it's U2
based not DB2.

Did anyone else notice the mention at the end of the extended article about
"Hybrid Relational" and "XML" database features?

Is 'hybrid relational' IBMspeak for MV? Anyone involved with U2 ever heard
this before?

BFaux ?

Unfortunately I don't think so. I think this relates to their XQuery
on DB2 efforts (but I'm not certain).

Yes, I have heard them talk about DB2 this way (or at least that was my
impression) since they have worked on extensions for XML, for example.

Oddly enough as a company looking to purchase a new MRP/ERP/DM system written in
UniVerse I downloaded the client and server Personal Editions for Windows on
January 10th. It appears from the download that this has been available or the
work was done to make it available in May of 2005. I recently installed the
Redhat version which as well had May 2005 date stamps on it.

However, the documentation is quite lacking for the RedHat download. I've just
created a page that needs a lot of love for installing UniVerse Personal Edition
on RH-FC3
