Has anyone got HPLIP to run successfully on Red Hat Enterprise 5.0

I have a site with 2 Colour Laser Printers which are NOT supported by
the standard Red Hat HPLIP module. I have downloaded the HPLIP 3.11.1
version (current version), and it looks like it has installed (ie ./
hplip3.11.1.run)

However, as soon as i use Print Manager and take the HPLIP option, add
the printer, it just says CUPS error (with nothing behind the scences
to say why).

If i just set the printer up as normal (ie Jet Direct), then choose
the appropriate "ppd" file, which ave been installed by the HPLIP
program, the system then says printer will not work becuase HPCUPS is
not installed?

Any guidance would be appreciated
