Default help : SSH & D3/NT - 04-07-2006 , 12:24 PM

Dear All,

What do I need to setup a SSH connection over the D3/NT server? I read
some of the posts mentioned about to use a Linux box as the SSH server
and do a port forwarding to the D3/NT.

It will be very appreicated if you provide more information on how to
setup the Linux server (what software do I need to need), and how to do
the port forwarding to the D3/NT server.

Thanks & Rgds,

You might start here:

If you are going to set up a Linux server, why not just ditch the Win
server, get a D3/Linux license and use the box that already has the
right tools?

Hi Tom,

for the company security policy, no "outside" user is allowed to
connect the server directly.

If you're using Windows, buy Windows software to do this kind of thing. An
excellent product is called "WinSSHD" from Bitvise, http://www.bitvise.com.

It has the SSH server and comes with a client. In addition, it does
secure FTP and can (or should) replace the Windows FTP service (uninstall
that piece of junk software).

You can also get an excellent free client from: http://winscp.net/.

Don't mess around with Linux this or Linux that. :-)

Hope this helps.

Download the ISO CD image for Debian "testing", burn it to a CD and boot
it. Once you get the base system installed, login as root and run "apt-get
install sshd". If you need help with the install, just post your questions
here. The ISO install is fairly staightforward for a stripped-down server.

Hi Glen,

after I installed the SSHD, how do I configure it to do the port
forwarding?

Many Thanks

Hi Bill,

I have tried the WinSSHD, why is it dropped to the Command Shell
instead of connecting to my D3/NT server? Please help.

Hi Korsan,

(from previous)
Quote:

This implies that you are in charge of a system that is governed by a
corporate policy? If that is the case you will do your company a
service by hiring someone with knowledge of computer systems and
networking.

If you can't set it up to work through one of the anonymous proxy
servers that you use for posting here then read this (actually posted
for others who might be reading):

Quote:

sshd doesn't do port forwarding, iptables or ipchains do that. I
suggested shorewall above to make configuring this a little easier,
there are other approaches including simply building a little rc script
to set it up when the system starts. Another self help suggestion:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquer...orwarders.html

If you are going to use the Linux box for this purpose alone you might
also consider using a dedicated firewall like Smoothwall so you won't
have so much RTFMing to do:

Hi Tom,

Yes. It should be done by all the "so-called" consultant. Most of the
consultant here don't know about D3 or PICK and don't want take the
job.

This is the reason why I need to do my own research. >.<

thanks for you advice and I will take a look.

Yes and No. sshd isn't configured to do the port forwarding. This is done
with ssh command when you connect up. iptables and ipchains have nothing
to do with it.
