Default Help with invalid account - 05-21-2006 , 11:49 PM

Hi
It's 12:50 am Sunday night. Oh s%*&# it's Monday morning already....We
are having a problem with a Universe account on NT. We get the
following error message "ACCOUNTING" is not a valid account name." We
are trying to move to another server that already has Universe.

We have the proper settings in both UV.LOGINS and UV.ACCOUNT. We are
able to LOGTO other accounts, except this one. I have tried creating
other accounts via the UniAdmin and can't LOGTO the new account. But
the setting in the system files are all the same.

Has anybody had this problem before? Any suggestions?

Peter

Sounds like you don't have a VOC in that account. How did you create this
account? Note that UV stamps the absolute path of the data file in the
header of it's index - so don't try a straight copy. At least without
updating the indices. Perhaps it's windows permissions on a file(s) in the
account.

Sorry, more of a UD guy. You can also try the u2ug.org website. They have a
mailing list that may be of more assistance.

good luck.

Colin,
Thank you for responding to my problem. Could you go more into details
about the "absolute path of the file in the header of it's index"? The
path name is in attribute 11 of UV.ACCOUNT. So, you are saying it needs
to be somewhere else? I was under the impressing that you can move
accounts and files around with Windows Explorer.

Not that it needs to be somewhere else - just that it needs to be reset.
IIRC setindex.

If you move the accounts around using explorer the header is still pointing
to the original location. I've heard this has lead to a training/testing
account updating the live account's index.

Does that make more sense?

Colin,
I understand what you are saying. The old and new servers have the
identical directories in both Universe and Windows. We have verified
all paths to be identical. A coworker is going to use a product named
Ghost to mirrow the old verse's drive and move it to the new server.
This should work. I hope.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know. I'll let you know
the out come.

Thanks,
Peter

I assume you moved the accounts (directories) between the machines with
simple "copy" or "explorer" - was universe stopped on both machines at
the time? If running on your source machine, and someone was logged
into this account, you may have gotten a "file in use".

I'd stop UV completely on old server with uvcontrol, and use task
manager to make sure all of those "pesky" UV and tl_service processes
have "died".

If you manually creeated the "new" entry for UV.ACCOUNT, make sure
there isn't a typo .... maybe delete the current one, copy UV entry,
then amend attrib 11 as necessary with the appropriate path

It's a nasty design "feature", that the absolute path name to the index
is stored in the data file (don't blame the guy in charge of the
feature, I don't know where it came from, but I do know there have been
attempts (scotched by management) to make it more sane).

So if you copy an account and move it elsewhere, yes updating the
copied file does corrupt the original file's index :-(

Oh - btw, UV.ACCOUNT is case sensitive. You have to get the case right
- which is why we always have both upper and lower case entries in it
....

Cheers,
Wol
