Default Hard drive psuedo tapes - 03-30-2007 , 11:58 PM

Is there any way to create an pseudo tape in Universe 10.xx on Windows
NT. Nothing I try seems to be right. I tried to copy the record in
&device& for fd0 and keep coming up with one of two messages.

Either I get >ASSIGN FD1 TO MTU 0
Error, could not open tape device.
Unable to open the operating system file "\\.\D:\BACKUP\".

or I get >ASSIGN FD1 TO MTU 0
Error, cannot access floppy drive (87).

here is the FD1 &device& record before each attempt:

02 ED &DEVICE& FD1
19 lines long.

----: P
0001: TEST FLOPPY
0002: \\.\D:\BACKUP\
0003: 500
0004: F
0005:
0006:
0007: \\.\D:\BACKUP\
0008:
0009:
0010:
0011: tape rewind $tape
0012: tape rewind $tape
0013:
0014:
0015:
0016: 500
0017:
0018:
0019:
Bottom at line 19.
for the first error and for the second error the device looks like
this:

Block}size...... 500
Device}type..... F
Lock files......
Rewind}device...
NoRewind}device. \\.\D:\BACKUP\TEST1
cpio-backup.....
cpio-restore....
Skip}file.......
Rewind}tape..... tape rewind $tape
Tape}offline.... tape rewind $tape
Field 13........
Field 14........
Field 15........
Input}Blksize... 500
Rotate}Flag.....
NLS}map name....

5 records listed.

I running universe 10.xx personal edition on a Win Vista box at home
as an experiment. I could move it to an older XP box but I thought
I'd try it on Vista first to see if it works. I've read through all
sorts of documentation and these are the best guesses I could come up
with.

TIA to any who can help.
Alan

Hi Alan,

Use uvbackup (/uvrestore) tools.

Do a search on this group for uvbackup and you will find plenty of
useful information.

I was kinda hoping there was a way to t-dump and t-load to the hard
drive like some other flavors of pick. uvbackup works fine. I just
wanted a little more freedom to save data to the hard drive. I know
I can set any new files to type 19 and have an ascii text file and
access the file data that way. I think it's type 19 anyway.
Also would like to do account saves and restores to the hard disk.

thx
Alan

Dave Taylor at sysmarkinfo has some tape.dump and tape.load utilities.
I think they are more for moving data into UniVerse rather than out of
it - but they may be of use. It is possible that they would need a
pseudo tape device defined to use - which puts you back where you
started.

You may also find more help at www.u2ug.org - especially on the mail
lists.
