Default Google Groups problem with CDP feed - 07-28-2011 , 03:00 PM

Unfortunately the people who need to see this probably can't...

As discussed in the past, CDP is not a Google Group, it's a Usenet
forum. Google gets the feed from other servers and re-displays the
data in their browser pages. They accept postings and send them back
out to the world.

Today Google is not processing CDP properly - they are not displaying
the global feed, nor are they displaying what their own site
subscribers are posting. This may be affecting a lot of Usenet
forums, or it might just be CDP. It's tough to tell all the noise
around related keywords.

If you post to CDP, your posting will probably make it to the global
feed. Unfortunately you can't see your own posting or anyone else's
because Google isn't displaying any data from today.

Be patient, don't re-post. Let's just take a day off.

I can see it. Thanks for the info. I'm responding just as a test. I
responded to one a couple of days ago and it did not go through, so
this issue is not just today, I suspect. Enough for now as this will
likely go nowhere. --dawn

I'm hearing that Google might still have a problem with their Usenet
feed so a lot of people who use Google for CDP may not be able to read
or post here.

To avoid such problems, I use Forte' Agent for Usenet
(http://forteinc.com/). They don't have a free version anymore but
I'll provide my older free version on email request. It's useful and
simple and I haven't changed my reader in 10 years. There are other
Usenet readers out there too. If you do decide to use a reader to
read/post, you'll need to get your "feed" from somewhere. Set the
news server to host: nntp.aioe.org. Again, there are many more but
this host is stable and provides a good level of filtering. Nothing
else is required.

All that said, once every couple years or so a Usenet host will decide
to change their services, or the servers start getting flaky and
undermaintained. Forums get questions like "does anyone know another
free host?" Suggestions abound, notes of thanks follow, and the
excitement all eventually dies down until next time. This is the
price we pay for using a 30 year old protocol and free services ...
kinda like email.

Just for what it's worth, I use news.eternal-september.org and
Thunderbird. Does what I need.

Ditto that combo of nntp server = news.eternal-september.org and
UseNet client = Thunderbird. /me recommends!
