I doubt there will be too many Java-type developers here who want to
play THAT heavily into XML-DMBS land .... whilst powered by "pick
technology", TigerLogic is NOT pick

Also note that yu REALLY have to look to find "d3" and/or "omnis" on
the site now

Maybe RD is not as dumb as we thought. Studebaker finally quit
manufacturing buggies when they noticed that they weren't selling.

RD is certainly not "dumb". They are milking their cash cow while trying to
produce a product that will justify higher stock prices prior to selling out
to anyone that creates a profit for Astoria Capital.

A strategy that's hardly in our best interest.

If you have any doubts where the money is going check this out:

I was interested in giving it a spin sometime about a year ago or so.
When I finally got an idea of the pricing, I decided there was no way I
was going to be interested for my own business or for any others I
might advise, even if I liked it. I haven't asked about their pricing
recently, but I think they are going to have a really hard time of it
given the current lay of the land (Oracle buying Sleepycat, and
Microsoft & IBM's efforts related to XQuery, for example).

RD is targeting big businesses, it seems. I think they missed the
lesson of "make new friends, but keep the old." If they are not
successful in this effort, competing with Oracle, MS, and IBM and
others, they will likely not be able to get their old friends back.

The thinking behind backing an XQuery DBMS tool with MV is really
admirable, wonderful, maybe even brilliant, but ditching their current
customer base (from my outsiders perspective) just seems like a very
poor business practice and I am guessing it will bite them, if it
hasn't already.

Just my two cents. Cheers! --dawn

Interesting. Just to make it easier, here is that URL unwrapped...

<URL:http://www.forbes.com/finance/mktguideapps/personinfo/FromPersonIdPersonTearsheet.jhtml?passedPersonId=2 62496>

Jeff, to keep those URLs from wrapping just enclose them in a "<URL:",
">" sequence.

Looks like the answer is a resounding NO! =)

I find the idea of storing data as XML interesting but I'd really
rather have tools that work with the database I already use (D3 in my
case). Raining Data has XML tools like parsers and XSLT translators
but they dont seem to want add that to D3. Not even for a price! That
sucks imo but what can ya do, eh?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I agree. I was looking for a Pick solution that had XQuery working
against it last year. I found it discouraging that RD didn't keep the
Pick languages/apis functioning against the data while adding in XQuery
with their TigerLogic XDMS product. They had a much larger installed
base, I suspect, when they started that effort and could have worked to
take their installed base with them, but they abandoned them instead,
hoping to get the big boys with their new offering. Sad. --dawn
