I want to start trimming down my system and am using captured output
from file-of-files to do this.

However, this info is out of date.

Is there any way to get up to date info on file-sizes for lots of files
without doing istat (s for each one?

By file-of-files, I assume this is a D3 system. For D3 non-NT, try

SAVE (sdf

This performs what's sometimes called a dummy filesave. It goes through all
the files capturing statistics, but doesn't actually write to
Tape.
