You would have to STOP the UV database under windows if you wanted to
do this kind of thing - yes, you COULD then use veritas or whatever,
BUT you would still loose the ability of resring individual items
(unless you had a DR machine you could do a "dummy" restore on.

Re: file with 3.8 million records .... that isn't really THAT many
records and or development box has 34,246 files acrding to fof, so
that will not be an issue .... BUT, things to look for/consider:

1) talk to Raining Data - THEY are the experts
2) look @ how your 100Gb is organized. I'm surprised that writing to
disk only saved 1hr in 24 over LTO ... I assume you were going to
spindles that weren't/arent used by the database to avoid contention.
What volsz did you have for the files going to disk.
3) check your modulo for ALL files. The one to pay PARTICULAR attention
to is file-of-files - if it is poorly sized you get an "unfortunate"
impact on performance for things like backup (our mod is 2903 for
reference). Try an online resize for any files you discover that are
poorly sized
4) Are you verifying the backp (or is this useless given the time lag &
the fact that the database has changed?) How much time is being spend
in "backup" vs "verify" phase
5) What IS the config of your disks?
6) When was the last time you did a full system backup/restore (yeah, I
know, time window - but if you have a badly fractured disk this can
have an adverse impact on speed as the backup is "logical" rather than
physical
7) What is the average item size for your "big" file? Just trying to
see WHERE your 100Gb is being consumed ... have you looked @
file-stats/fof for answers

More questions than answers - but your answrs will be useful

hmmm, thought that was a bit light on --> the 34K files was at a client
site (must remember to look @ the title bar) - our internal dev system
has 102,464 files & modulo of fof is 5003

Would migrating to Universe on a Windows box be advantageous? With
Universe, do you need to do an Universe-based file-save? or is it done
just at the OS level like Veritas backup on Windows?
UniVerse has an internal backup utility like D3 does. UniData requires use
of an O/S backup utility.

Before you seriously think of converting you might want to discuss this with
Raining Data. Then contact someone for consulting to help you with the
conversion.

Just my $.02. :-)
