There have been several posts here and elsewhere recommending the "download" product from cedarville.edu. I downloaded it at home last night and read the pdf. It looks like something that would save me/us considerable time and effort at work. The boss, however, is cautious. He would feel a lot more comfortable going with a product backed by IBM or a known reputable software house / supplier. The fact that it's free seems to actually count against it. The reason for the post is : If you've used the download product could you please post a few words to summarise your experiences. If you can provide something to establish some sort of credibility - like you work for a national defence agancy or something - it might help me to help my employer. |

The alternatives will doubtless turn out to be 'too expensive' where the shareware will be 'too unreliable' |

[snip] I have worked with numerous Datatel customers, all higher education institutions, who rely on this product daily for a ton of production work. It is very, very solid and quite feature rich. I also know the author, Dr. David Rotman, quite well (and have read his disseration on decision support systems) and know others who have helped maintain DOWNLOAD with him (it is maintained with good business sense, not just as one man and a machine). [snip] The alternatives will doubtless turn out to be 'too expensive' where the shareware will be 'too unreliable' I can recall no instances of DOWNLOAD being unreliable (although I'm sure there must be some anecdotes as there are with all software -- I just don't recall any such with DOWNLOAD). and you should just invest in some nice new stone tablets and shiny new chisels. ;-) |
