Default Doubled Up and All Okay - 07-30-2006 , 06:38 PM

Okay, I doubled my database frame allocation and all is well so far.
Here are the steps I took.

1. Went into single user mode and made sure no one was on the system
but me and that the phantoms were logged off. Then as an extra
security messure, I disconnected the network cable since I wouldn't
need it as I worked from the console.

2. Backed up the database using FILE-SAVE and verified tape with
T-VERIFY.

3. Shutdown D3.

4. Logged into Linux as root and ran: fdisk /dev/sda, and did the
follow commands:
n - for new partition
l - for logical partition
[Enter] to accept default starting cylinder
+1447 - to create 9 GB partition
p - printed out the partition table to the screen to verify everything
was right
w - wrote partition table

5. Added a line to the pick0 file. I added:
disk /dev/sda9 0 9221278 # disk 1

Just below the other disk entry which looks the same, except it was for
sd8.

6. reboot

7. The system automatically starts d3. D3 reported that the frames
were added. Did a FREE command which showed that I now have 53%
available. It worked!

8. Reconnected network cable and rebooted again.

9. Did another FILE-SAVE and T-VERIFY. Everything checked out.

Released system to users.

Regards,
Danny

There might be one problem. I've been resizing since I doubled the
database and now the DM is giving me messages that CPU is exceeding
25%. The rate is still in the twenties. Is this something that I
should be concerned about?

Does 18 GB D3 database require a better processor than a 1.12 GHz
Pentium 4 with 2 GBs of RAM?

Thanks,
Danny

That's just syschk blabbing away.

Either disable syschk or set the parameters to something realistic.

Douglas,

So why is the default threshold set so low?

Is it abnormal for a D3 database to generate more then 25% utilization?

How do I set the threshold?

Thanks,
Danny

If you are resizing a big system there will be a lot of CPU usage in
rehashing all the items into their new groups. It's not unusual.

If after the restore and resizing is complete and the CPU usage stays high,
then you'll need to look deeper into the system.

Why is it set so low??

Who knows? All I know is that whenever I do an upgrade or install and
forget to tweak syschk, I can guarantee a frantic call from the users
the very next day.

Personally, I just comment it out.
