Default Devices setup on Xp for Universe PE 10 - 05-19-2005 , 04:46 PM

How do I get Universe to recognise my DVD/CD drives on Universe PE I
cannot use Uniadmin because it does not recognise my Login Id. Even
though I am the only user on my laptop, so any help in setting the
devices up in uv shell. I have not setup Universe on a standalone
machine before as you may have gathered !!!

Please help !!!!

Hi,

You will need to add an entry to your &DEVICE& file in the UV account.

The device will also need to shared, list the &DEVICE& file to get an
idea
on its layout.

Lot of U2 questions in here lately. Did IBM do some marketing to
convince people to download UV PE? Did some VAR dump his user base
and they don't know about the U2 forum? Did people finally decide
MySQL really isn't the way to go, so they're all coming over to
Universe? Tune in next week for ... as the Universe turns...

Hi Tony,

I can only speak for myself, but moving to the U2's has provided a
far more secure future for both myself and my family, and the clients
as well.

I can provide you with a large list of ex D3 sites that have done one
of two alternatives, either they have migrated to the U2's with the
associated benifits, or as in most cases have simply migrated away from

D3 (read MV) and turned the D3 server off.

There are many reasons for this trend, and you have voiced many of them
yourself, I will add a couple more for the record, based on my own
expierence.

1) The D3 / Windows port is an abomomation that won no friends. The U2
implementation on Windows platforms works very well and is very
solid, particularly for the larger sites.

2) Believe it or not, certification. The IBM U2 certification program
carries a lot of weight with many customers, some clients are
specifying that the consultant _must_ have IBM certification before
they are allowed access to their systems.

I am not supprised that there is an increasing number of questions in
relation to the U2's in this group, the U2's have a far brighter
future.

Barry

Hi there,
Sounds like the &DEVICE& problem may already be solved for you. As for not
being able to use UniAdmin, it's been my experience that in order to use any
of UniVerse PE on XP, you have to have a user account with a password set
up, even if you are the only user. It's also been my experience that
UniAdmin doesn't work too well with U2 PE (at least the version of UniAdmin
I had). I just reverted back to an old version of UVAdmin (release 2.0 in
my case), and it works fine.
