Default Database connections - 05-13-2007 , 11:24 AM

Hello CDP,

I've been away from the MV world for a little while now and I was
wondering if any of the MV vendors offer a license that will allow an
unlimited number of connections to the database? I am wondering (out
of my own curiosity) if it is possible to deliver a solution using a
multivalue product that would allow thousands of concurrent database
connections.

Many thanks,

Tedd

Virtually, all of them.

You would need to make a much better case (more than just wondering) before
anyone in their right mind answers with specific pricing.

I'll second Jeff's opinion. Based on some info IBM passed along last
year, I am certain that IBM UniVerse will fit the bill, and most
likely the others will too.

You might wnat to talk to at least the following: IBM regarding
UniVerse or UniData (IBM has largest installed base in MV), Revelation
OpenInsight (Revelation has nice toolsets, has evolved from strictly
Microsoft server platform), Intersystems Cache' (newest kid on the
block for MV, but has a focus on and history of scalability,
performance, and 24/7 for their Cache' customers), and jBASE (doesn't
run in a VM, C-code running in OS). You could also consider D3 from
Raining Data (the original Pick, but company seems to be struggling
with the offering as no one seems to be migrating to D3), Reality from
Northgate (mostly in the UK, but big contract with Nebraska
Furniture), Ladybridge OpenQM (amazingly good for the price, whether
open source or not--I don't know if it will scale that high), and
maybe even EDP UniVision (although I can't tell if they want new US
customers or not).

They should each be able to tell you the max concurrent users in their
current customer base or benchmarks they have taken as well as their
pricing structure based on the requirements they get from you
(connectivity approach for web or client/server or is it green screen,
for example; server OS, etc).

Best wishes. --dawn

Most if not all of the MV products are likely to have internal tables
sized for the maximum number of users that could connect (e.g. locking
limits) so a truly unlimited licence is probably not possible.
However, a very large licence should be available on all products.

OpenQM has been tested with 1000 simultaneous active terminal user
processes and we know of no reason why it could not go very much
higher.

You do not state quite what you mean by a "connection". If you are
talking about real terminal users, these require persistent processes
on the server. On the other hand, if you are talking about web
connections, they do not need a persistent process and even a small
system could support thousands of uses. It all depends on transaction
rates.
