Rich, you have provided valuable and compelling feedback about why one
might want to use Linux rather than Windows. However, some of your
reasoning is based on v7 experience. I am NOT discounting this on any
of the commentary here. I'm just trying to focus my question for
which so far I have not received a single direct answer.

Yes, I agree with Scott that having a Linux "black box" precludes many
people from making changes. And yes, restoring Linux data is less
stressful than Windows. There is no disagreement on any of these
"Linux is better because..." comments.

However, Linux is not the right solution for all end-users, nor for
all VARs. Support for Linux based on experience is admirable but
that's not the topic of this thread.

Reasons NOT to move to Linux include:
- Site doesn't want another system to maintain.
- Connectivity becomes a focus as soon as you add another system to
the network.
- VAR may not yet be familiar with Linux.
- End-user is well qualified with all aspects of Windows
administration and they don't want another OS.
- Site already has software to do backups and they don't want
something special for Linux.
- Site doesn't want the complication of multi-purposing printers
between operating systems.

I'm not saying these are things that make Windows "better". These are
just equal and opposite points that someone will want to consider in
the Windows vs Linux decision.

However, again, please ... that's not what this thread is about.

I really want to know if anyone using D3 Windows v9 is contemplating a
move to another OS or another platform because problems from v7 still
haven't been resolved.

Thanks.
T

Tony,

Perhaps the "better" question to ask is "is there anyone actually
USING D3/Windows V9 in a production environment" to switch

I remember MANY years ago speaking with companies that had 100-300
users deployed on D3/NT, and as you are probably aware, these large
user population D3/Windows sites simpl don't exist anymore AFAIK -->
certainly the ones I was aware of switch or migrated many years ago.

The problems may well have gone away, but I fear so have many of the
VAR's. I know I certainly have no intention to even seriously test the
environment for production deployment, because like Rich (and I
suspect many others who tried to "stick with the program"), past
events have simply been sooo bad, and there is no imperative or even
vaguely good reason that I can see to tempt fate.

I don't believe a new client is REALLY going to care that his database
is running in a virtualized environment under Hyper-V (even more so
when TL certify it!!) if they are really dead set on a Windows
environment, in kuch the same way that they don't blink an eye to have
their exchange or SQL server running in seperate VM's

I hope you find the answers you were looking for, and for the record
the issues I had reported still existed with initial D3/Windows V9
release .... I haven't bothered to test with latest service pack, b ut
will probably do so obver coming weeks
