Well, Peter Mc should be happy, as RD have released D3/Windows 7.5.5, |

The only notes I see about this
are a couple words changed in the product status page, and of course
if you know to look at the FTP site you'll find it there.
Seriously - it's good to see this go production.
But I can't wait to see Peter's reaction to the note that the DBMS has
only been certified over Vista Business and Ultimate, not the Home
editions.
Expecting history to repeat itself as it often does...
And of course the next question will be "What about Windows 7?" Ross
is running W7 RC (pre-production) and I suspect at some point after W7
goes production TL will do final certification before announcing
support. I could be wrong, but don't expect certification of D3 over
W7RCx. They're usually very conservative about that, rightfully so
IMO. It's tough to "certify" a platform that's not production yet.
OS vendors make a lot of changes just prior to final release and
pushing out a product before that final release can mean your software
doesn't work with the production OS. Microsoft says W7 will be
available on October 22. I'm guessing that means we won't see D3/W7
until sometime in or after January. They may surprise us with a
version of D3 that's certified over the latest RC, or maybe just
certified for developer use over W7. With information ever flowing
only inward at that company, who knows what they'll do next.
This also means there will be a lot of people still on Vista saying
"but Windows 7 is out now, where's D3W7"? And my guess is that there
will be broken things that aren't fixed for Vista because it's already
a dead platform and both Microsoft and TigerLogic are racing to get
W7-compliant software out and get over this Vista disaster as fast as
possible.
So... My personal advice is: if you're not on Vista, stay off it. Put
your D3 over W2008, which is a real server after all and not a
glorifed workstation, or wait for Windows 7.
YMMV
