Default d3 t-load question - 07-08-2010 , 07:44 PM

Guys,

On d3 7.something on AIX can a t-load be done from a file-save generated
tape? Let me know.

It's been awhile, but since nobody else has responded yet, I'll take a
stab...

Unless D3 has evolved, the method to retrieve data from a file-save tape is
SEL-RESTORE. The docs will have the syntax, but you can retrieve an item
from a file, multiple items, or an entire file, by either
accountname/filename/itemname or file number.

You are so correct! The format of the data is different from the file-
save and the t-dump. T-dump tapes is where the a person would do a t-
load from.

"T-dump tapes is where the a person would do a ***T-LOAD*** from."

Anyone recall the lesser-known "T"-option on the SORT/LIST command to
operate directly on a T-DUMP?

Yes, I remember that functionality but I think it was invoked via the
"tape" modifier, not the (t option. It probably still works- 'tape' is
in the current D3 dm,, as just "ct." I used that when limited disk
meant archiving things to tape, and had procs that would prompt for
mounting a tape then display what was on it. I think it requires the
"using dict ... " construct.

In addition to the correct answers already provided, taking your
question at face value, the answer is: No. T-LOAD cannot be used.
SEL-RESTORE is what you use against a file-save created with the SAVE
verb. T-LOAD matches T-DUMP. The 2 tape formats cannot be
intermingled. If the tape was created with the FILE-SAVE verb as your
text above indicates, then it is of the SAVE tape-type format, not the
T-DUMP tape-type format. Only SEL-RESTORE will work for you to get
the data back. Or ACCOUNT-RESTORE. That will work too. Some
implementations also have ADD-ACCOUNTS. That would work too.

SEL-RESTORE can be annoying to use. It can be tedious.
