Default D3 and Project Server integration - 12-01-2005 , 06:11 PM

G'day!

Anyone out there with any experience integrating Microsoft Office
Project Server (MSOPS) with D3 (or I suppose mv in general). Not
looking at doing this work ourselves on the Project side of the puzzle
(note: this is project SERVER, not 'ordinary' project, so backending
into a SQL Server database, but will need some "stuff" done for Project
Pro (ie: the user interface).

I'm looking for people/a company that HAS DONE this - I know that we
'could', but I'm looking to fast track something if possible.

Please contact me directly (rossf) @ stamina.com.au

Interesting lack of response but not surprising.

Ross, you may need to modify your request to be less emphatic about
getting someone who HAS DONE this. As you know I've had experience
with Project, and separately with other MS Office apps to MV, but not
specifically with Project Server to MV, though I have it here as part
of MSDN. There are various ways to approach this: with a managed COM
add-in, XML-based Project data service, Web Services, or what's called
the Object Link Provider. I'd take on a project like this but you'd
have to expect some research as part of the effort. I'd also use
mv.NET for ease of development and cross-platform capabilities.

Regards,
T

Tony,

The HAS DONE is important simply because, like you, we COULD DO this,
BUT were looking for a fast-track approach. Getting someone with
experience reduces the R&D effort somewhat (been there, done that), but
also recognise that what we want to achieve is a non-trivial task.

(BTW, as you are probably aware, MSOPS has a "real" database at the
backend [SQLServer] so we also have access to triggers etc, as well as
the web service route [operates under sharepoint] and also by global
script [you can have libraries that bare automatically inherited by all
projects])

If I have no other takers, we may well be talking .... detailed spec
will start to be developed by a seperate team closer to the client next
week, and this is likely to take 6-8 weeks

requirements?

Yep!

A "real" detailed spec --> obviously NOT being developed by us, but
rather a "Microsoft Business Partner" in Perth, engaged by the client
..... who strangely enough (once we got into the "project") don't have
anyone on staff with detailed Project knowledge

As to that "wrong" word, I think that Tony & I (for once?) would agree
that there is more than 1 way to tackle virtually any problem these
days - each with their own relative merits. My current leaning is
towards the scripted/Macro solution, as it works with an abstracted
view of the project data, and remains largely unchanged at the core
between releases (their is a new release of MSOPS due out next year).

My attraction to this solution is because it would work for smaller
clients as well, who could simply use Microsoft Project Professional at
a single location wth a single project manager, rather than a larger
enterprise with 50 project planners/managers spread across multiple
geographic regions in AusNZ.

My current leaning is to forget about Microsoft Office entirely and use
OpenOffice wherever possible. Microsoft Office is a truly loathesome piece of
crap. I hate it with a passion.

And, I understand from the U2 list last week that the Ooo people are
prepared to work with the MV world to provide/work towards some
inter-communication tools....

Not a "resurgence" for MV, more a "surgence"

BUT

When a major client has just adopted Microsoft as THE way forward, I'm
going to follow .... also, I don't believe that OpenOffice has a
Project look-alike (not that it matters really - we have been told what
to use, MSOPS wins because of another add-on product that encompasses a
PM methodology)

Also, if your summation is correct, just provs that beauty IS the eye
of the user/beholder

Luke,
Why do you hate MS Office? You remind me of people who drive Hyundai
and hate BMW.
I have nothing against OpenOffice but after using it must say MS Office
is much better product. Maybe give a go to 2003 version
