Default D3/NT Server upgrade questions - 11-01-2005 , 08:38 AM

I have a client running D3/NT 7.2.1 on a W2K box. They only want to
upgrade their hardware.

Are there any hardware considerations to be aware of? I.e.
Hyper-threading on a P4s?

If their new box comes with Window Server 2003, are there any issues?

They would really like to avoid a D3 upgrade because they feel 7.2.1
does what they need without any major issues. However, if there was a
clear advantage to upgrade D3, I might be able to persuade them.

Cheers,

Kevin,

D3 7.2.1 will install and work on both XP SP2 and Win2K3 SP1 without any
tricks. P4 HT, LGA775, DDR2, etc. aren't a problem either.

IMHO 7.2.1 is (one of) the best D3/NT ever released.

BTW I wonder if anyone here counter argued

We had the same issue, and we DID upgrade from 7.2 to 7.4 when we went
to Windows Server 2003.

Our rationale was not because of any hardware issues. It was because of
2 software issues.

1) We wanted the ODBC services to work. They didn't (for whatever
reason) on 7.2 and do on 7.4.

2) We felt we were just too far behind in terms of releases. Some people
are happy to just keep chugging away on R83. We felt that, while we
don't jump on the "latest and greatest" bandwagon, we were entering a
state where if we ran into a problem RD would always say "upgrade and
see if that solves your problem". We didn't want to be in that position.

We did upgrade, and there were no problems.

I think the main issue for your client on 7.2 is the support issue.
