Default D3 Linux on RHES 4 - 11-16-2006 , 09:24 PM

Hi All,

I have come across an interesting problem installing D3 over RHES4.4 on
a IBM xSeries with a ServeRAID controller.

The system has hardware mirrored disks with a d3 raw partition sharing
the mirror. Provided the system is left in multiuser mode and not
rebooted, the install and data restore is okay, but as soon as the
system is rebooted, d3 can no longer find the raw partition (reports
invalid licence activation).

The Linux command 'raw' confirms that the raw parition has been linked
okay.

Just for interest, the ServeRAID controller was removed, a complete
disk allocated as 'raw' and all was sweet.

Then re-install the ServeRAID controller, installed RHES3.5, set
mirrored disks with same partitions as in original RHES4 install
(/dev/sda6 = d3 raw), and d3 is quite happy.

Has anyone had any similar issues with D3 running on RHES4.4 in a
hardware mirror setup.

TIA

Barry

Barry,

I take it the 4.4 designation is "Update 4" ?

Please be aware that D3 is only certified on RHEL 4 Update 1 as far as
I'm aware .... I know there should be no changes of consequence --> and
yet I have a base "Update 1" set of disks that I always use!

Did you load the correct drivers for the controller (linux dd at
install). You should NOT use the standard/base drivers that ship with
Linux --> they will recognise the drive, but ...

We have a few xSeries machines with mirrored drives out in the field
(will have pushed out 7 systems in the last 3 weeks) and have had no
problems (mind you, I visited a site earlier this year & had to reboot
their server which had been up for 1473 days!!)

What model is the HostRAID controller? Is the firmware updated to the
"latest" release (within the update 1 limits noted previously)? ....
really sounds driver related to me ..? (FYI, we set the file type of
raw partitions to D3 .... nice'n'easy to identify)

Hi Ross,

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

After reading your comments above, the only setup process I have not
followed is to dd the ServeRAID driver during linux install.

The redhat version I am using is rhes 4 update 3, although I did get
that slightly wrong in my original post (my memory is not as good as it
use to be). As per the current RD d3/os matrix, d3 linux 7.4.2.33 runs
on rhel 3 update 6 and rhel 4 update 3, I was using rhel 4 update 3,
but are now using rhel 3 update 5 (not 6 yet), which is working okay.

I am not too phased at present, this system is just a test system which
the client can play with until the new system arrives. The client is
moving from APPRO which they have had for 10+ years, the client is
moving well outside their current comfort zone, I wanted to give them
something they could use to get thier toes wet, as well as doing some
UA testing.

I am very encouraged that you have had a system up for 1473 days, this
information does give me the warm and fuzzies for when the new server
arrives.

I will take your advise on board, thanks for your time.

Barry

Your problem solves very easy. Just install the D3 patches you can find
out in www.rainingdata.com. Specially:

Linux.Install 7.5.0* Install
D3_Setup_mv Setup
Linux.7.4.X-M13 Monitor
638674xa239 ABS

Take care with:
D3_flash-lx-7.4.17-.Z
Linux 7.5.1-S1

They give me many problems with ODBC DLL and indexes and SQL.

I do not install them.
But with the 3 first patches you solve the problem you have

Hope this help
