Default D3 Linux 7.4 - 11-04-2003 , 11:27 AM

I see that this version runs on RedHat 9.0.
Will it also work with earlier versions of RedHat?
I have RedHat 7.1 - can this work?

I'd guess 'no.'

I wonder if RainingData has started sweating about what release of Redhat
they'll recommend after 9.0 goes unavailable... I can't really see them
publishing their own distro, or marketing a D3/Unobtainium product...

And this problem will also face IBM, jBASE, Oracle etc (actually, the
latter company probably likes the fact that people are going to start
to pay for the OS :-)

Unavailable and unobtainable? Where do you get that? RedHat did have
a webpage up which explains the Enterprise (for fee) version vs the
Fedora (for free) version. They just took it down today, no idea why.

I'm sure RH will formalize it's plans for the future and all of the
vendors including Oracle, jBASE, and Raining Data will announce their
positions for the future. I suspect everyone will just build over the
most supported release and pass costs down to the end-user.

Fuzzy thinking here; RD just released 7.4, having been two full releases
behind RedHat until then. In six months RH 9.0 goes 'end of life' and I was
thinking RD would never get another RH certified for 7.4.1 or whatever in
just six months. But a) RD can move faster if they have to -- they just
didn't _like_ RH 8.0 -- and b) RH9.0 is for sale until a year from now.
Can't see RD chasing Fedora's almost-quarterly rollouts, so I guess
RH will get 350.00 US$ annual rent on each D3/linux 7.4.1 box...

I understand what's happened and I'll maintain as quoted below that it
just looks like RH now intends to get out of the free software
business and start charging for what they distribute. It therefore
seems likely that any company who currently supports RH Linux will now
support the Enterprise version or plan a migration path for their
customers to other distros.

As for RD or any other company "sweating it", the DBMS software has
already been written. Maybe it's a good thing that vendors won't have
to worry about supporting a v9.1+. There IS the problem of end-users
getting a copy of RH9 to load under their new DBMS releases, but come
now, is there a VAR out there selling this software without their own
copy inhouse which can be provided to their customers? If there is I
think someone isn't serious about what they're selling.

This all happened yesterday, give the dust some time to settle and
let's see what happens.

Try this link http://fedora.redhat.com/about/rhel.html for the Fedora

IBM may have just spoken concerning the Red Hat matter. Seems
Novell has purchased SuSe and IBM has taken a 50 million USD
stake of preferred stock in Novell. Since IBM already uses SuSe
in their eServer line it would be a logical step. No if RD will give
us a hint...
