Default D3 7.4 - 10-02-2003 , 10:34 AM

Hi

Why should we upgrade from D3 7.3 to 7.4. I have been told to
justified this upgrade.

Thanks,

Gustavo

Unfortunately things change. If your running D3 on a Windows box then you
almost must keep D3 upgraded to within a few updates of the windows box or
else it just might quit working.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it work, and does what you need
to do, don't fix it. However, this weekend I did a massive amount of
updates to an NT4 box. Whatever it updated on the OS it trashed the D3
Activation codes, and it refused to activate the current level of D3. So I
had to update it to 7.2 Then it activated just fine.

Same thing could happen to a linux or other platform. If you wait for it to
quit working it may take you a couple of days to get the update. You do
have your D3 Service Contract up to date?

D3 7.4 is a minor release that provides:
1) Better performance with RH9
2) General fixes and enhancements

As Stefano implies, RH9 is the big thing for D3. This brings back
performance that was lost in RH7 due to disk update issues that were
introduced into Linux itself.

The Enhancements and Resolutions report (E&R) can be found here:
http://www.rainingdata.com/support/d...40/Enhance.pdf
(you may need to patch that URL together)

Many of us are still trying to figure out what the REAL changes for
7.4 are as well. The E&R doesn't give you the marketing spin on the
latest changes, especially regarding licensing. You can find some
licensing info here:
http://forums.rainingdata.com/index.php?showtopic=185
That's not the whole picture, however. VARs should test D3 7.4 on
their own test systems before installing at a client site.

I think it's too soon yet to say why you Should upgrade to D3 7.4
except for the points above. There aren't any solid reasons why you
should Not upgrade either. Because there is very little information
available about their stealthy changes to the system, my vote right
now is simply to stay with what works.
