Give him a break. This doesn't sound like these are native concepts to him.

The main difference between custom programming and application generation is
consistancy. Given a fixed criteria, a generator will always generate the
exact same code. The custom programmer, the good ones, approach programming
like an artist approaches his painting. Even if you've drawn the same
picture or written the same (kind of) program a dozen times, a true artist
will never do the exact same thing twice in a row. Their knowlege and
experience allow them the time to embellish or enhance.

The other big difference is that the custom programmer can make the quantum
leaps in intuition and imagination, knowing that they've been here before,
which allow them to skip large portions of unneeded code that the geneator
will create because it only knows the layout created by the tool-makers.

Think of a programmer as a baker and a code-generator as a cookie cutter.
If you're looking for consistancy, a generator is definitely the say to go.

Of course they don't - otherwise he wouldn't be at school "Studying"
them, and then turning to the newsgroup to get his answers rather than
doing his own reading.
