Default Comp.Databases.Pick is screwed up! - 05-02-2005 , 02:16 PM

The Google news group has a bug!
Apparently, Google's attempt to fix the "Amos" postings resulted in a
contaminated data base!

At the bottom of the first page, clicking on "OLDER TOPICS" brings up
the message "This group has 0 topics. Click here to post the first
message." So, we do not see the older postings!

Additionally, searching for "Dave Weaver" brings up some postings that
were not authored by myself!

I will report this to Google.

Dave, how many times do I have to tell ya?

Google is not Usenet!
Comp.Databases.Pick does not live at Google!
Get yourself a real news reader and you don't have to worry about
Google (BETA SOFTWARE!) screwing up your news!

And yes, here is what Google says about Usenet:

In Dave's defense, there was a problem with Google's view of this group
on Sunday.

Suddenly there were zero (0) missives, and you were invited to be the
first to post.

In my recollection, message number one belongs to David Ruggiero, and I
wasn't about to overwrite his place in history.

Cheers

Speaking of Google...

Have you noticed that the "View Titles Only" shows posts almost
immediately. While, the "View with Message Text" can wait hours before
showing recent posts.

Before anyone lectures me, I know I'm not on a real newsreader. Some
day when I have time, I'll do everything right.

Cheers

Douglas

Thank you, Tony, for the URL's for research.
Now, what do you recommend as a suitable "real news reader" for WIN98
up.
I do not use Outlook. I have used Eudora for years as my email client.
So, it seems that what I need is a good Windows news reader. Any
Suggestions?

If you click on "Sorted by date of most recent message" you CAN get to
"Older Posts" albeit only one or two posts per "page".

If you click on "Sorted by date of first message" then the 2nd page
reports there are zero postings in the group -- as Doug stated.

I reported the problem to Google support. Here is what they wrote back
to me ....
Thank you for your reply. The problem you described is only in the
display
of the posts. They still exist in our archives. You can get to them by
searching on a specific date or by going to the group's About page and
clicking on the monthly numbers for the archive. Our engineers are
attempting to fix the display problem, and we hope to have it fixed
soon.
We appreciate your patience.
Regards, The Google Team

So, soon (any-minute-now-as-programmers-say) Google will get the
problem fixed.

Wow, I had never gone to the "about" page before... And there I was on
the monthly top ten just because of my new little notes this morning.

I see I have a long way to go to get on the list of all-item top
posters. That's pretty heady company there.

Oh well, we all need goals.

Tony,

For the record, almost everything at Google is called "beta". Even
their award winning news site is avoiding certain copyright hassles by
proclaiming itself as "beta".
