Default Cognos Business Intelligence mv equivalent - 08-13-2010 , 09:04 AM

Hi group,
Is there an equivalent MV friendly software that is compatible with
IBM Cognos Business Intelligence? I have a pending project and my
client wants to use Cognos. If the integration is easy, I can probably
steer then in the other direction.

Thanks,
-Peter G.

From Cognos, "IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence is built with a
single, modern Web services architecture." What this means to me is
that COgnos can use web services to interact with MV databases
directly. Some of the database have web services bundled with the
latest product releases. Others may require you to use socket
libraries to utilize web services. Bottom line is, MV istelf is
software that is compatible with IBM Cognos Business Intelligence.

Bruce,

I think you will find that the "Web Services" reference refers to the
way that YOU interact with Cognos, rather than Cognos sucking in data
through this gateway (though happy to be proven wrong)

You might want to check out our Visage.BIT product
http://www.visagedesigner.com/Visage/bit.htm which may meet your
needs. You can also have a "play" with a small demo cube over the web
if you like

BIT is part if the complete Visage suite, and can be deployed
seperately (as can reporter + fax & email gateways). Whilst we "don't
care" what you use for access to your core application, access to the
BIT cube is via a GUI. As well as web deployment, you can also use
BITSolo, which allows you to manipulate cubes in a standalone,
disconnected mode which is ideal for "road warriors"

I was in a meeting with people who knew nothing about Pick. We were
discussing a partnership to bring mainstream BI offerings to the MV
market. Somehow the model didn't gel as the demand for this runs hot
n cold in this market. We were talking about various ways to move
data into a reporting repository where they were more comfortable, and
I happened to mention that Datastage might be an option. "Oh yeah, we
use Datastage all the time."

Maybe the secret to getting people to use Pick is simply to not call
it Pick anymore.

This harkens back to the thread in QM and my blog, where I proposed QM
and BASIC as the hot new NoSQL stack to compete with LAMP. I think
that has legs.

Apologies for not mentioning Visage.BIT with other MV offerings.

Peter,

We have several clients already using COGNOS with Reality. The SQL/
ODBC interface for Reality is straight forward to set up and can
easily be mapped into MV data. Why not give it a try? Something else I
have been looking at the moment is a BI tool which is in the cloud -
ZOHO Reports. Take a look. It does not come with a MV interface but
its not difficult to get data in there and it appears to be a very
powerful quick beast.

Thanks Mark. I'll look at the SQL/ODBC interface for Reality. The
database will be Reality, so it's good to know that the interface is
easy to setup.
