Default Chuckles - 05-24-2011 , 07:56 AM

I am amused. Been reading the WhatWG sepc for HTML5 - and, in
particular, the section dealing with Microdata where it describes
nested items with various attributes.

They call them "properties" of the items, not "attributes,"
but here's the kicker: they are (can be) Multi-Valued (!)

You're right....

"The microdata model consists of groups of name-value pairs known as
items.

Each group is known as an item. Each item can have an item type, a
global identifier (if the item type supports global identifiers for
its items), and a list of name-value pairs. Each name in the name-
value pair is known as a property, and each property has one or more
values. Each value is either a string or itself a group of name-value
pairs (an item)."

A thick client/browser could send WebRead, WebReadu, WebWrite, etc.,
requests through a thin web/application server layer and deal with
what are, for all intents and purposes, Pick items as we know them.
Just as we are used to running PickBasic programs on a dedicated port
where we deal with Pick items in either dynamic or dimensioned arrays,
the browser could be dealing with virtually identical Pick items in
Microdata format. What we then need is a relatively simple mechanism
on the application server to service the requests, maintain lock
tables for browsers that may die/timeout, etc., and a rich enough API
to do all we need/want to within the client browser. Because there
would be so little transformation required between the Pick items and
the Microdata representation, it would appear to be a "no brainer"
that a web application like this could not be better served by any
competing DB model.

Are we also amused by the term "Microdata" being used here to refer to
data and the pun on the original Pick licensee? Or did I miss
something?

Cheers

Yes. Microdata in HTML5 being a model for representing multivalued
data. As of old.
