Default Challenging the users in the MultiValue community to produce an Application that runs on a Thumb-Drive - 02-19-2010 , 03:17 PM

Haven't seen this mentioned yet here in cdp:

The Colorado MultiValue Users Group is Challenging
the users in the MultiValue community to produce an
Application that runs on a Thumb-Drive.

Requirements:
1- The Application to include all database elements
must run on the thumb drive.
2- If the application deploys files outside of the
thumb-Drive the submitted Application will lose marks.
3- The deployed the database or the Application
it's self [sic] must run on the thumb drive.
4- Those applications that demonstrate advance
functionality will receive higher marks.
5- There are no limitations on the size of the
Thumb-Drive.
6- Creativity will be rewarded with higher marks.
7- If you plan to mail in your Thumb-Drive you will
need to include a self addressed stamped envelope. *
8- Without self addressed envelope with postage No
Drive will be returned.
9- You can Mail Thumb-Drives to:

*1mage Software, Inc.
Atten: Dan Schmitt
384 Inverness Parkway
Suite206
Englewood, CO 80112

All submissions are due by the end of the First Day
of the International Spectrum Conference (12th of
April 2010).

You are welcome to attend the conference and present
your Application in person.

Winners and awards will be announced at the Conference
Closing Party on the 15th of April.

Of course, OpenQM can load onto a USB drive. There is even a download on
the OpenQM website available that loads a copy of OpenQM and AccuTerm
onto a USB drive for you to play with. Apparently, this was demonstrated
at the 2008 Spectrum Conference.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi all,

Come on Colorado MultiValue Users Group - Get your head out of the
sand!!!

As observed by other responses, QM has offered this for a couple of
years. We have clients using this for truly portable applications that
can be plugged into any Windows PC and run without installing anything
on the PC itself.

We gave away USB sticks with a demonstration application at the 2008
International Spectrum conference. The content of this demo is
downloadable from the openqm.com web site.

Quote:
1- The Application to include all database elements must run on the thumb drive.
Absolutely everything is on the USB stick. There is no dependence on
any other software being installed. It runs on all versions of Windows
back to 98.

Combine this capability with the Managed Flash Technology from EasyCo
and you get absolutely amazing performance too. I have a USB stick
here on which I have an application that runs several thousand update
transactions per second. That's pretty clever for a device with a
random write capability of about 15 writes per second.

2- If the application deploys files outside of the thumb-Drive the
submitted Application will lose marks.

Full marks then!

3- The deployed the database or the Application it's self [sic] must
run on the thumb drive.

These three points really seem to be rewording of the same
requirement.

4- Those applications that demonstrate advance functionality will
receive higher marks.

How advanced would you like to go? Anything that can be done in an
application on a hard drive installation can be done here too.

5- There are no limitations on the size of the Thumb-Drive.

None.

6- Creativity will be rewarded with higher marks.

Just what does "creativity" mean in this context?

7- If you plan to mail in your Thumb-Drive you will
need to include a self addressed stamped envelope. *
8- Without self addressed envelope with postage No
Drive will be returned.

Download it instead!

Unless there have been some developments that I'm not aware of, I
would have thought that rather than having their head in the sand,
these guys have said "you HAVE to use QM for this challenge", because
AFAIK that is the only MV product that is capable of running
standalone on the thumb drive (pretty sure all of the other players
would need to install registered components, though happy to be wrong)

Yes, that is how I, too, read it. I thought they were doing Martin a
favor by setting up an event that would require use of OpenQM. --dawn

I hadn't even considered that it might be a leading question!

Is an old AREV application acceptable?
