Default Blast from the past for older Oz Pickers - 05-08-2007 , 11:34 PM

I noticed the following article in shm.com.au and thought it may be of
interest to other Australian members of the group who have been around
for a while.

Actually, the article says,
"...now largely forgotten..."

Consider it done. Graeme (AT) philipson (DOT) info and letters (AT) smh (DOT) com.au .Note that
they do get 400+ emails a day so getting printed may be hard.

Hi Dawn
Mr Philipson is mighty touchy. Totally explosive in fact terribly miffed
that one should suggest that he was wrong. He then went on to say that he
could find no reference to Pick on your site so I have suggested that he try
the the first blog " Is Codd Dead ". Perhaps
Graeme Philipson
Research Director

Connection Research
does not know how to use the search facility in Explorer.

Hi All
I have had further correspondence with Mr Philipson and he has definitely
put us straight :-)

"It's not Pick! If it were so, the users of the products that have evolved
from it would call it such"

"Why are you guys hiding from your past?"

He kindly included an article that he wrote in 1994 to verify his claim and
"Perhaps it will fill in some obvious gaps in your own knowledge"

Funnily enough the only person that he quoted was Amanda Miles. Many of us
will remember the delightful sales person from Vmark. I learned two very
important things from Amanda - Spending several hours in one's office with
an intelligent, tall blonde discussing the replacement of Unidata with
Universe is not only very pleasant it does wonders for the corporate
visibility of a non-descript mid fifties analyst. Also never accept shares
as payment if you cannot trade them on the open market - come the take-over
Amanda was told that her share scrip was not worth the paper it was printed
on.

Funnily enough I have learned something useful from Mr Philipson as well.
He has an excellent Spam Killer www.Totalblock.net

Unfortunately I feel that he is misguided and have pointed out that I agree
with Dick Pick and included a quotation from the Advanced Pick introduction.

"Pick Systems has provided a state-of-the-art operating system which is
portable to many different hardware configurations, giving the user the most
up-to-date system level capabilities, plus the ability to upgrade hardware
without the fear of redeveloping software."

Don't go too hard - he mentioned Pick because it was part of AWA's
history. The article wasn't about the community or the operating
system/database. Getting a senior journo thinking we are a bunch of
over-sensitive people living in the 80's doesn't serve the community
any good at all.
Maybe a few well worded emails from our leading lights highlighting
MV's evolution since the Pick days and some current success stories
might get him interested in a positive way?

cheers,

Brett

He sent me a nice response including a piece he did on Pick in 1994.
He said he might do another at some point. --dawn

Hi
He is the one that came in like a raging bull. I listed some of the current
Pick successes from U2 through Cache to D3 and QM and got a tirade about it
not being Pick. I referred him to Dawn's site and he said it did not
mention Pick. He sent the article and I suggested he do a more modern one
demonstrating his knowledge of Pick now. Apparently I impugned his
professionalism by saying that he was wrong in suggesting that Pick was
forgotten.

Did nobody notice two important key words "Operating System"? Pick as an
O/S has been a dead and buried for lo these many years, barring only a
few small shops with ancient boxes stuck here and there.

In any case, be honest. If he'd substituted the word "largely" for
"long", he'd still be right, even if he was talking about MV databases
generally. Even at the height of its popularity, Pick was a
much-overlooked technology.
